Harry Redknapp: I’m A Celebrity star reveals the REAL reason he turned down Strictly 2019
Harry Redknapp, 72, captured the hearts of Britain when he won the ITV series of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! And now the star revealed he had the chance to appear in another reality show, Strictly Come Dancing. The football pundit explained he decided against putting on his dancing shoes for the BBC series after being approached by show bosses for a one-day trial. Speaking to the The Mirror with his wife Sandra, he said: “The BBC bosses sent over a dancer to put me through my paces for a day, but it’s not for me. “No chance. It’s a great show but I can’t dance to save my life, can I, Sandra?”
He added: “Even if [I’m a Celebrity’s] Fleur and Emily gave me some lessons, I’d still be hopeless.”
Harry’s admission comes after he previously revealed he had contemplated taking part in the dancing competition before being signed up for the Bushtucker trials in the Australian outback.
Speaking to the MailOnline, the football manager said it was his son, Jamie Redknapp, 45, who was the reason behind his decision to skip the dance floor last year.
He told the publication: “I told Jamie I was thinking of doing [Strictly] and I don’t think he was pleased about it.
“And so I was offered the jungle at the same time and chose to do that.”
The former West Ham manager also divulged he did not tell Jamie about his plans to head Down Under to the Australian jungle and “kept quiet”.
He said: “But I didn’t tell him about that one, I just went for it because I didn’t think he’d be best pleased with that either. I kept it quiet.
“I thought he might get the hump otherwise.”
It appears the jungle favourite will not be following in the footsteps of his former daughter-in-law Louise Redknapp, 44, who took part in Strictly in 2016.
The singer was runner-up to BBC broadcaster Ore Oduba who lifted the Glitterball trophy.
The former Eternal star was previously married to Jamie before they split in 2017 after 19 years of marriage.
Meanwhile, Harry has opened up about his relationship with his former daughter-in-law, Louise.
According to The Sun, he admitted he and his wife Sandra, 71, are still on good terms with their son Jamie’s ex-wife.
The jungle king also added the family are still “amicable” despite the spilt.
Harry said: “It’s all amicable, absolutely, Sandra talks to Louise’s mum all the time.”
The football manager explained Jamie and Louise’s divorce was a “big blow” at the time.
He said: ”It was very difficult for us, it was a choker. We love Louise as well, it was a big blow to all of us.”
