A mother-of-two has lost more than a third of her body weight after a birthday shopping trip ended in tears in the changing rooms.

Merrisa Best, from Wells, Somerset, slimmed down from a size 20 to an 8-10 after reaching breaking point when she struggled to fit into an XL jumper in November 2016.

The experience led to the 37-year-old joining Slimming World and, just over a year later, Merrisa had ditched an impressive 5st 5lbs.

Speaking of the fateful shopping trip Merissa, who is originally from Australia’s Sunshine Coast, said: ‘It was the day after my 35th Birthday and I was out shopping with family.

‘I walked out of that shop having purchased what was supposed to be a loose-fitting light jumper in XL, which was skin tight on me and couldn’t realistically be worn. That was my breaking point.’

Restaurant supervisor Merrisa, who has been with her husband for 20 years, went along to the next local Slimming World meeting and began walking more in a bid to shed the pounds.

After giving up her high calorie diet and taking up more walking Merrisa ditched an impressive five stone and five pounds

The mother-of-two achieved her weight loss in just 13 months going from a from a size 20 (left) to an 8-10 (right)

She said: ‘On the night I joined slimming world I weighed in at 14st 8lbs.

‘My original target was to lose five stone which I achieved in 13 months. I then lost five more pounds to sit at 9st 3lbs.’

Just over two years after the traumatic shopping experience, Merrisa says she now loves clothes shopping and has even begun working as a Slimming World consultant to help others lose weight.

Merrisa, whose children are two and four, said losing the weight has also allowed her to be ‘the mother she always wanted to be’ as she can now get more involved and play with them rather than sitting on the sidelines.

She says that losing weight gave her the confidence to speak out about her depression and she now feels she is ‘the mother she always wanted to be’

She continued: ‘My son suffered a brain haemorrhage shortly after he was born prematurely, three months before I joined slimming world.

‘He spent nine days in NICU and I felt helpless and worthless as a mother. I did not feel like was enough for him.

‘I did not realise it at the time but I was suffering from borderline post-natal depression and losing weight not only gave me the confidence to say to my husband that something was not right with how I was feeling but it also helped me build my confidence and self-worth.

‘It is easy to lose your identity as a parent and going to Slimming World meetings and spending that hour focusing on me made all the difference to my mental well-being.

‘Losing the weight helped me recognise that I am more than enough for my children and am worthy. Something I genuinely doubted before.’

Hot off the back of her own weight loss success, Merrisa began working as a Slimming World consultant last January and now helps other people to lose their extra pounds and improve their relationship with food.

She now runs three weekly sessions with over 120 members and was also crowned Miss Slinky, Woman of the Year and the Greatest Loser at her own group.
