Colts punter nearly hit by snowball during play in playoff game vs. Chiefs
A snowball nearly hit Indianapolis Colts punter Rigoberto Sanchez during a play in Saturday's AFC divisional-round playoff game at the Kansas City Chiefs' Arrowhead Stadium.
Video footage shows a snowball thrown from behind the end zone landing right in the vicinity of Sanchez prior to a first quarter punt. While the snowball did not connect with Sanchez, it was close enough to his feet to have potentially distracted him.
Sanchez's punt went for 43 yards, and Chiefs returner Tyreek Hill lost an additional yard on the play.
NBC's Michele Tafoya reported that Chiefs coach Andy Reid admonished Kansas City fans for throwing snowballs onto the field. Television cameras showed a replay of one Chiefs fan launching a snowball from the stands.
Inquiries made by USA TODAY Sports to the Chiefs regarding the incident were not immediately returned Saturday.
A winter storm in Kansas City didn't stop the two NFL teams from squaring off on Saturday. Crews worked Sunday to get the stadium ready for the game despite chilly temperatures and about six inches of snow blanketing most of the northwestern Missouri region. Chiefs fans were also in abundance despite the slick driving conditions.
