However, the Met’s commissioner called the BBC show, starring Adrian Dunbar as Superintendent Ted Hastings, “ridiculous” for its portrayal of out-of-control police corruption. 

Commissioner Dick said she met Vicky McClure, who plays Detective Inspector Kate Fleming in the show, and described her as a “brilliant strong woman, playing a strong part”. 

But she added: “The police force she works in is astonishingly, appallingly corrupt in a way that is utterly unimaginable. 

“The idea of most of what I understand of what happens in that programme is absolutely way beyond the bounds.”

Speaking about recruitment, Commissioner Dick said: “The fact that people are interested in the drama is getting people interested. 

“Caring about policing and wanting to be involved in policing, that’s really important.” 

She made the comments on Good Morning Britain as the programme celebrated 100 years of women in the Met.

The Met’s first female commissioner paid tribute to policewomen being honoured at a service at Westminster Abbey, saying: “Those early pioneers broke through for the rest of us.”
