Asia Argento: Rose McGowan’s apology came too late

Asia Argento has accepted Rose McGowan’s apology for her comments over the Italian actress’s underage sex — but says the mea culpa is too little, too late.

Argento took aim at her ex-pal in a pair of tweets Thursday.

“Although I am grateful to @rosemcgowan for her full apology following her groundless allegations about me, if she had issued it earlier, I may have kept my job on X-Factor and avoided the constant accusations of [pedophilia] which I have been subjected to in real-life and online,” Argento wrote, retweeting McGowan’s apology.

In a follow-up tweet, she said, “Now go on, live your life and stop hurting other people, will you Rose? Best wishes.”

The beef between the two #MeToo champions and Harvey Weinstein accusers, who documented their budding friendship on social media, centers around accusations that Argento had sex with her co-star, Jimmy Bennett, when he was 17.

In a statement issued last month, the “Scream” actress recounted how her partner, model Rain Dove, told her that Argento had admitted to having sex with Bennett in a series of text messages.

McGowan also said Argento had received nude photos from Bennett since he was 12 years old — an accusation she refuted in her apology Thursday.

“On 27 August I released a statement about Asia Argento, which I now realized contained a number of facts that were not correct,” she wrote on Twitter.

“The most serious of these was that I said that the unsolicited nude text messages Asia received from Jimmy Bennett had been sent since Jimmy was 12 years old. In fact, I had misunderstood the messages that Asia exchanged with my partner Rain Dove, which made clear that Jimmy had sent Asia inappropriate text messages only after they met up again when he was 17 (still legally a minor in California, but notably different from a 12 year old).”

Earlier this week, Argento threatened to sue McGowan if she didn’t retract her “horrendous lies.”
