American actress Cynthia Harris died on October 3 aged 87 in Greenwich Village, New York City. Her cause of death is yet to be confirmed. The Mad About You star’s family have spoken out in a statement. They said: “In addition to having devoted her life to the theater she was active in many philanthropic causes.

“Cynthia is survived by her loving partner Nathan Silverstein, her devoted assistant Terrence Mintern, her brother Dr. Matthew Harris (Frances), her sister-in-law Maryjane Harris (brother David predeceased her) and many nieces and nephews.

“Cynthia’s passing is a great loss for the dramatic arts and for all of us.”

The actress appeared in many television series and movies, such as Archie Bunker’s Place and All My Children.

One of her most recognisable roles was playing Wallis Warfield Simpson, the future Duchess of Windsor, in the award-winning drama Edward and Mrs. Simpson.

She starred alongside Edward Fox who played her spouse of the same name.

Cynthia previously said of their relationship: “I think her Americanism attracted him [to her] … he felt that he would be a new king for a new age.

“And she didn’t really know all the things that you are not supposed to do.

“She could have made him feel that everything was possible. I think she was very warm and very witty.”

Fans will also remember the actress as Sylvia Buchman in Mad About You.

The role earned her a BAFTA Award nomination back in 1979.

As well as her on-screen roles, she starred in a series of Broadway shows.

In 1963, she made her debut as an understudy for the drama Natural Affection.
