Delph recalls brutal prank by Given that left him injured for three days
Who needs enemies when you have friends like Shay Given?
Fabian Delph has recalled the time his former Aston Villa teammate played a brutal prank, which put him out of action for three days.
The Manchester City and England utility man, 28, said the goalkeeper sought vengeance after he emptied out his washbag in a caper of his own.
It’s fair to say Given cranked things up a notch or 10.
Speaking on the BBC’s Football Focus, in a segment set to be aired on Saturday, Delph, sitting opposite Given, said: "This guy here, my pal, put two dead fish in the back of my car, under the mat where I wouldn’t see them.
"All I did, by the way, was empty your washbag."
Worse still, his car was just two days old and the fish were in there for three days, in the sun.
Delph continued: "You could imagine, if it was in there for an hour, it’d stink, wouldn’t it? Three days? Pretty poor, if you ask me, mate.
"You know what you don’t know about that situation? I used to struggle with migraines, so anything that has a strong smell sets a migraine off.
"I was renting Barry Bannan’s house, so I literally packed my car up, put my oldest and missus in the car and drove all the way back to Leeds, but got stuck in traffic.
"The smell absolutely battered me – it put me out for three days. I couldn’t get out of bed for three days."

Given, fighting back laughter, said: "I just remember you hammering me down the phone at the time then about three weeks later, you rang me again saying, ‘The smell’s still here?’"
Delph added: "I couldn’t get rid of it. I must have got that car cleaned 10 times."
Given, however, was keen to point out that it was a cautionary tale.
He said: "You always tell the kids that if you play with fire you get burned – you started it!"
