Detroil Mayor Mike Duggan announced during Aretha Franklin‘s funeral at Greater Grace Temple on Friday that the water front concert venue Chene Park will be renamed after her.
Duggan said he would send a proposal to rename the venue as Aretha Franklin Park to Detroit City Council for its approval. “And when performers from generations to come, from around the world, come here, they will be reminded that they are performing at the home of the Queen of Soul,” he added.
The mayor also said: “When Aretha Franklin sang, it sounded like the voice of Detroit.”
After performing at the Chene Park Amphitheater in during its 30th Anniversary in 2015, Franklin said in a Free Press Interview that it was a “beautiful venue.”
