Dolly Parton’s Earthquake Emergency Plan Includes High Heels and Makeup

Preparing for impending earthquakes is a fact of life for Los Angelenos. Backpacks brimming with batteries, flashlights, and nonperishable food items are tucked neatly by doorways or other emergency evacuation exits. But for one particular city frequenter, an earthquake emergency plan also factors in high heels and makeup.

Dolly Parton, our Lady of Country Music, recently revealed in an interview with drag icon RuPaul Charles for Marie Claire that she’s nearly never not wearing a pair of high heels or dolled up in full makeup—specifically so that if California’s Big One deigns to shake its way through L.A., she’ll be camera ready.

“I always wear my high heels. Don’t you?” Parton told Charles.

She explains her logic, “I have to always stay ready—street ready, I always say. I have to keep my makeup on and keep my hair done. Like, when I’m in L.A.—I’ve told you about it—if it’s going to earthquake, if we get an earthquake, I’m not running out in the street looking like you look now. I have to be ambulance-ready at all times, if I get sick or something. But I actually do wear high heels most of the time. They’re not always as high as the ones I wear for show. But I’m little. I’m short. And I have to wear heels in order to reach my cabinets.”

Whatever one’s opinion is about staying constantly glammed up, Parton makes it clear that there’s only one person she’s trying to impress: herself.

“But I always enjoy wearing the shoes too, and I just feel more like me,” she said. “But I can come down, though. I’m comfortable in my own skin; I’m comfortable with my image. I dress for myself more than I do for somebody else.”
