Donald and Melania: The Love is Real, but They're Leading "Separate Lives"

Fear, Bob Woodward’s new book about the Trump presidency, isn’t just dropping bombshells about the White House staff and the machinations happening in the Oval Office. It’s also giving readers a close look at the relationship between President Trump and his wife, First Lady Melania Trump. According to People, Woodward writes that Trump and Melania are indeed in love, but that they’re basically living two separate lives.

“West Wingers and those who traveled regularly with Trump noticed that he and Melania seemed to have some sincere affection for each other despite media speculation,” Woodward writes in Fear. “But she operated independently.”

Woodward adds that it’s not a complete surprise, considering everything that Melania and Trump have been through in the past few years alone. Not only have media outlets reported on the couple’s relationship status, everything from Melania’s outerwear to the way the husband and wife hold hands has been put under a magnifying glass. Add to that the fact that women have come forward accusing Trump of sexual harassment, Stormy Daniels claiming to have had an affair with the sitting president, and the hot-mic Access Hollywood tape and there’s plenty of reason for there to be tension between Donald and Melania. But according to Woodward, Melania has other things to focus on. Namely, their son, Barron.

“They ate dinner together at times, spent some time together, but they never really seemed to merge their lives,” Woodward notes. “Melania’s primary concern was their son, Barron.”

The White House hasn’t released an official statement regarding the claims of the first couple’s distant relationship, but White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders did address Woodward’s book itself.

“This book is nothing more than fabricated stories, many by former disgruntled employees, told to make the President look bad,” Huckabee’s statement reads. “While it is not always pretty, and rare that the press actually covers it, President Trump has broken through the bureaucratic process to deliver unprecedented successes for the American people.”
