Donald Glover Was Intimidated By Beyoncé On 'The Lion King' Set, Obviously

Donald Glover is taking over the world, and even he gets nervous around celebrities. Well, not just “celebrities.” We are talking about Beyoncé, after all. Beyoncé and Glover are voicing the lead roles of Nala and Simba in Disney’s live-action The Lion King film. Since the stars play characters who are lovers and friends, Glover is already a little intimated by Queen Bey.

“We started recording some stuff and it’s, you know, it’s a little intimidating,” Glover told Entertainment Tonight. “[At least] from my point of view. Just hearing her do it, it’s been like, ‘Man, this is a really special thing.'”

Glover also shared he’s such a big fan of the original movie, and when Disney gave him lyrics for the musical numbers, he was already prepared.

“Everybody who’s involved is a fan, and everybody who’s involved knows it really well,” Glover said. “They’re like, ‘So here are the lyrics,’ and I’m like, ‘I know the lyrics! Don’t worry.’ I was in fourth grade when this came out.”

Sadly, we’ll have to wait until July 19, 2019 for The Lion King remake, but in the meantime, here’s everything we know about the flick:

Besides Glover and Bey, the rest of the cast is *kisses fingers like an Italian chef* incredible. Chiwetel Ejiofor is voicing Scar, Seth Rogen is Pumbaa, Billy Eichner is Timon, James Earl Jones is Mufasa, and John Oliver is Zazu… to name a few.

The film will incorporate CGI and live-action scenes (similar to the 2016 reimagining of The Jungle Book) and will be directed by Jon Favreau.

Another tasty little tidbit: Apparently, not everyone in the cast gets to meet Beyoncé when they show up to the recording booth. Eichner talked to ET last month and lamented that he still hadn’t crossed paths with the queen, despite voicing characters in the same film.

“I have not met Beyoncé yet. I don’t know if I’ll ever meet her!” Eichner shared. “It’s a long process because we started last August and it doesn’t come out until July 2019, but I’ve been doing some singing. We recorded a bunch of the songs. It’s been me, Seth Rogen, Donald Glover singing ‘Hakuna Matata.’ Life is very surreal and fun.”

While the cinematic pairing of Glover and Beyoncé feels surreal to us, we’re also very onboard with Eichner and Rogen’s take on Simon and Pumbaa.

“We’re playing off each other,” Eichner said of his scenes with Rogen. “A lot of improv, a lot of some old stuff that people love from the first movie, new stuff. I mean, we’re making Timon and Pumbaa our own, which I know the world has been dying for. But we’re having a blast, and there’s a lot of pressure, and we want to get it right.”

Beyoncé is also reportedly recording a new song for the soundtrack, or rather, Elton John (who did the music for the 1994 film) says he’s “speaking to Beyoncé’s people,” per The Sun. John also confirmed the new film will only feature four original songs, which are: “Can You Feel The Love Tonight?,” “Hakuna Matata,” “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King,” and “Circle of Life.”

Maybe if we’re lucky we’ll get a new track from Glover, too. The man who gifted us “This Is America” should absolutely breathe new musical life into The Lion King

Le sigh. Is it 2019 yet?
