Cardi B has posted a statement in response to backlash she has received over an old live stream video that she recorded three years ago. In the old video, Cardi stated that she drugged and robbed men that she took to hotels during the days when she worked as a stripper.
Cardi does not speak positively of the experience in her live stream, claiming she felt forced to do it. “I had to go strip,” she says in the live stream recording, “I had to go, ‘Oh yeah, you want to f**k me? Yeah, yeah, yeah, let’s go to this hotel,’ and I drugged ni**ers up and I robbed them. That’s what I used to do.”
Late yesterday afternoon, Cardi posted a written statement that did not deny the video or her past comments. “So I’m seeing on social media a live I did 3 years ago has popped back up … where I talked about things I had to do in my past right or wrong that I felt I needed to do to make a living.”
In her statement, though, Cardi tries to justify herself by pointing out that a lot of other hip hop artists have ugly pasts — but that she at least does not “glorify” it. “Im apart of a hip hop culture where you can talk about where you come from,’ she continues, “[and] talk about the wrong things you had to do to get where you are. There are rappers that glorify murder, violence, drugs [or] robbing … I never glorified the things I brought up.”
The long statement may make some of Cardi’s fans feel a little better that she is “owning” her past and not proud of it. However, it is likely that many on social media expected more remorse, regret or even an apology to those she drugged and robbed, as the post strikes a bit of a defiant rather than apologetic tone.
Below we have the video that caused all the trouble for Cardi, as well as the full statement that she made yesterday about her past actions.
