Inside Perrie Edwards’ rise to fame – painfully shy student to sexy superstar
With her sassy songs and sexy outfits, Perrie Edwards oozes confidence when she’s with her Little Mix bandmates .
But back in the day, the drama student was so shy that she had to be bribed by her mum to take part in The X Factor .
Just 18 when she wowed the judges with her version of Alanis Morissette’s break-up anthem, You Oughta Know, the timid blonde would later admit she only did it because former soul singer Debbie promised her an iPhone.
“I was petrified," Perrie admitted. “I just thought if I went on the show and I didn’t get through and I failed, people were going to talk.
“I didn’t think I was anything special. I’d rather sit in my bedroom and write songs and play guitar than have everyone cringe at me."
What is her net worth?
Perrie is believed to be worth around £3million, and raked in £1million of that in 2016 alone.
Little Mix’s company, Eternal Dance Media, banked £3.5million in music and merchandise sales, and their 2016 Get Weird tour made £3.1million gross profit.
Mega-hits incuding Black Magic and No. 1 album Glory Days gave a huge boost to their bank balance, and the girls also have a kids’ clothing line in Primark and a range of Elegant Touch Nails .
The band was the most-streamed in 2017, and has shifted more than 36 million records, making them the ninth best-selling band of all time.
“The girls have been touring the world and are working non-stop, and now their efforts are paying off financially. They have become an international brand," a source told the Daily Mirror.
The X Factor
"She never wanted to do it. She thought she wasn’t good enough. I put the application in and told her she was going because I was taking her," Debbie told New magazine back in 2011 – the year Perrie became part of the first band to ever win The X Factor (sorry One Direction!).
Sadly, Perrie’s solo efforts came to an abrupt end when she failed to get past the bootcamp, and was instead put in girl group Faux Pas with Jesy Nelson.
And when they got rejected at the judges’ houses round, the pair joined forces with fellow band Orion – featuring Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall – and Little Mix was born.
Well, kind of. They originally called themselves Rhythmix but that had to go when they learned a childrens’ charity had the same name.
Who is Perrie Edwards’ boyfriend?
Perrie’s first love was of course former One Direction star Zayn Malik.
Love blossomed when 1D returned to perform on The X Factor in 2011 – the year Perrie was competing. A flirty Twitter exchange about a cinema date gave fans their first hint of romance, and it was signed and sealed when the pair was spotted snogging in May 2012.
Proving they were serious, the couple adopted a doggie called Hatchi that November, but the next month Zayn was accused of cheating with an Australian waitress he met at a London club.
Desperate to save their relationship, he went and got a tattoo of Perrie in June 2013, before proposing that August .
Things were happy for a while, with Zayn throwing Perrie a surprise fairground-themed 21st birthday in 2014, but 10 months later Zayn was once again accused of cheating and hit back with a bizarre tweet announcing, "I’m 22 years old… I love a girl named Perrie Edwards. And there’s a lot of jealous f***s in this world I’m sorry for what it looks like x"
He then shockingly quit the band , with X Factor judge Louis Walsh not-so subtly appearing to blame Pezzer.
"What I found in the past is as things get on, and as they get girlfriends, the girlfriends are whispering things in their ears and saying like, ‘You should be a solo star,’ ‘You should be the lead singer.’ That’s usually the problem," he moaned to RTE Radio 1.
But Zayn’s plans to be a ‘normal 22-year-old’ and enjoy time with her fiancee came to nothing when he then called off their engagement – allegedly by text message – in July 2015, just weeks before they were due to move into their new £4.2million home .
Almost instantly he was linked to supermodel Gigi Hadid – who he reportedly met at Kendall Jenner’s birthday party – but denied he broke Perrie’s heart over the phone.
"I love her a lot, and I always will, and I would never end our relationship over four years like that. I have more respect for Perrie than to end anything over text message," he said.
She was understandably gutted, admitting in Little Mix’ book Our World that she cried every day .
"It was horrible, the worst time of my life. A four-year relationship, two-year engagement ended by a simple text message. Just like that," she said.
Nevertheless, she had the last laugh with Zayn reportedly getting dumped by Gigi two years later. And after exorcising her heartbreak with sassy track, Shout Out To My Ex – which hinted he never gave her an orgasm – she moved on with hunky footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in 2016.
And in January 2018 she put her three-bedroom Surrey bungalow on the market for £800,000 amid reports she plans to shack up with her man.
“Perrie and Alex are so close. Things are going so well, no-one would be surprised if they started living together some of the time," a source told the Daily Mail.
“She’s always saying how she wants to wake up with him every day.”
Perrie Edwards has a stomach scar from childhood surgery
The body-confident star regularly bares her midriff, but admitted she hasn’t always been comfortable showing the scar left by a childhood operation.
"My [biggest body-hang up] is my scar on my stomach," she told Now magazine.
"When I was little, my oesophagus was too small, so I had to get it operated on to help me eat properly. I had to have lots of operations, so that’s why I don’t want to show it."
Where does the name Perrie come from?
The South Shields-born star got her unusual moniker from her music-mad parents, who got their inspiration from Steve Perry, the lead singer of rock band Journey.
Before her engagement to Zayn ended in 2015, the pair had been trying to convince the group to perform its signature hit, Don’t Stop Believin’ at their wedding.
Perrie’s dad Alex was nearly a star himself, having almost fronted AC/DC and played the Northern club circuit in the 1980s.
And it was from her dad that she got her musical start.
“I don’t think there’s a word to describe how proud I feel about Perrie, but I am proud of all my kids. She’s living her dream – and mine," he said in 2011.
"The advice I’ve given Perrie over the years when we have been sitting playing our guitars is to learn to play as many instruments as you can, and most important write your own music.”
Debbie remarried Mark Dufty when Perrie was just four, but they split with Mark blaming The X Factor.
"Since Perrie got on the X Factor we have split up. That was Deb’s decision. Since she has been going backwards and forwards to London for the show and for Perrie she has decided she hasn’t got time for the marriage," he told the Daily Mail that year.
What are Perrie’s Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram and Facebook accounts?
The singer is a big lover of social media, and regularly shares updates with her 31.1k Twitter followers and 7.8million Instagram followers.
