Laurence Fox ‘contemplated suicide’ during custody battle with ex Billie Piper

Laurence Fox has admitted that he thought about suicide during his bitter custody battle with ex-wife Billie Piper.

The actor says fighting for access to his sons Winston, nine, and six-year-old Eugene left him broke and thinking about taking his own life.

The Lewis star, 40, suffered anxiety attacks and insomnia throughout the process, which saw him face his Doctor Who star ex in court last month.

Laurence, DI James Hathway in the ITV series, split from 35-year-old Billie in March 2016 and divorced her two months later, with the couple citing "unreasonable behaviour" as the reason behind their separation.

Speaking about the custody battle, which lasted over two years, he told Mail On Sunday : "I was certainly in a very dark place at one point — at my lowest ebb.

"I almost felt like I couldn’t go on. It all felt so hopeless.

"I understand why some men feel so hopeless they commit suicide and find themselves lying on the train tracks."

The actor added that he found it "hard to sleep" but that the support of his friends and family and the thought of his "gorgeous kids" got him through the tough time.

Huge legal fees meant that he had to remortgage his house and sell his motorbike, however he doesn’t hold a grudge against his ex, famous for her role as Rose Tyler in the hit BBC sci-fi show, saying he wishes her love.

He called on changes to be made to the "flawed" legal system which he says tries to find blame in divorce cases.
