Britney Spears will not perform again if her father continues to be in charge of her career, her lawyer said in court Tuesday.
“My client has informed me that she is afraid of her father,” Samuel Ingham told the judge. “She will not perform again if her father is in charge of her career.”
Spears’ father Jamie Spears controls her estate via her conservatorship.
The 38-year-old singer had filed a suit to have her father removed as her co-conservator. However, on Tuesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny declined to do so but said she would consider future petitions on the matter.
Financial company Bessemer Trust has been appointed as a co-conservator.
Meanwhile, Jamie’s lawyer claimed that while under her father’s authority, the singer has gone from being in debt to being worth $60 million and that removing him as conservator would harm her.
James has been the singer’s co-conservator since 2008, when the singer suffered a very public breakdown. He later became sole conservator in 2019 after attorney Andrew Wallet resigned from his co-conservatorship.
The singer has put her musical career on hold since early 2019.
