What Lineker said about Liverpool’s CL chances in December now looks foolish

Liverpool continued their superb Champions League form on Tuesday night to dismantle Serie A giants Roma – and it may have left Gary Lineker a little red-faced.

Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino both scored twice as the hosts ran out 5-2 winners at Anfield. The result means Liverpool have put one foot into the final in Kyiv next month.

The Reds’ progress in the Champions League has caught many by surprise, including Lineker.

Back in December, the BT Sport presenter rated Liverpool as the least likely English club to win it.

When asked to rank the five English clubs in order of their chances of winning the Champions League, Lineker told Ball Street: "Probably Manchester City [have the best chance], given their current form," he told Ball Street.

"Secondly Chelsea, they were our champions last season and have still got some very good players.

"Manchester United third. Jose [Mourinho] is a winner. They’ll be difficult team to beat, especially in the knock-out stages.

"There isn’t too much between Tottenham and Liverpool. Both can be great on their day, both can be poor on their day.

"I’ll probably just sneak Tottenham ahead of Liverpool".

Are Liverpool going to win this Champions League?
