Meghan Markle rejected a date with Ashley Cole and fans won’t let him forget it

Ashley Cole has been mercilessly trolled on Twitter in the wake of the Royal Wedding.

It seems no one wants the love rat footballer to forget that he once pestered Meghan Markle for a date.

Luckily for Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex was having none of it and after ignoring his attempts to slide into her DM’s she was warned off the philandering footie ace by a British journalist.

And now royal fans have praised Meghan’s taste in men.

"Lol Meghan turned down a date with Ashley Cole, babe had her focus," one tweeted.

"Lol the Ashley Cole thing still makes me laugh my a** off. What a mess that was," another added.

A third wrote: "Meghan knew what kind of person he was from the very first moment and quickly shut it down like a boss and bagged a Prince. Girl’s an inspiration. She doesn’t easily get swayed by good looks."

Suits star Meghan previously revealed she was being pursued by Cheryl Tweedy’s ex in an interview with a UK based journalist four years ago.

Having no idea who Cole was, the newly divorced actress asked the journalist’s opinion.

Writing for the Mail Online , Katie Hind revealed: [Meghan pulled an] iPhone from her handbag, she pointed to the picture of a good-looking man on her Twitter account, and said: ‘Do you know this guy, Ashley Cole?

"’I bet,’ I said calmly.

"She continued: ‘He wants to go out on a date while I’m over here in London. What do you think? Do you know him?’"

At the time Ashley was earning around £100,000 a week and at the height of his career playing for Chelsea. But in the UK he was known as pop princess Cheryl’s ex, who had a roving eye reputation. Meghan, who knew nothing about his cheating past, was swiftly informed – and decided to swerve a date with the footie ace.

She said: "Some of my friends told me to stay away from him, too. I think I’ll leave it."

Meghan, then 32, had just divorced film producer husband Trevor Engelson , and was meeting up with UK journalists in a bid to get a mention in press the other side of the pond.

It comes as childhood pal Ninaki Priddy opened up about Meghan, claiming her desire to be famous outweighed her commitment to her marriage.

Schoolpal Ninaki branded Meghan "calculating" – adding she morphed into a new person after tasting fame.

Meghan married her ex back in 2011 on a Jamaican beach. They split two years later after she landed her role in Suits, which filmed in Toronto. Previously it was thought the pair grew apart after Meghan spent months filming in Canada and her beau was based in LA.

Ninaki says otherwise.

"The way she handled it, Trevor definitely had the rug pulled out from under him. He was hurt," she said, explaining that while Trevor was heartbroken, Meghan was less affected," she told Mail Online.

Prior to their split, Ninaki – who was maid of honour at the wedding – said the pair doted on each other and Trevor would have done anything for the actress.

"Then, after the wedding, it was like a light switched off. There’s Meghan before fame and Meghan after fame. After three seasons of Suits, she called me to say the marriage was over."
