Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino is nearly free: What we know about his time in prison
Prison has been, well, quite the situation for Mike Sorrentino.
The “Jersey Shore” star, known by his nickname “The Situation,” was arrested along with his brother Marc and charged with multiple tax offenses involving nearly $9 million in income in 2014. In January of 2018, he pleaded guilty to one count of evading taxes on $123,000 in income. The 37-year-old is scheduled to finish his eight-month prison sentence tomorrow.
But what has The Situation been up to during his time behind bars? Here are some details of how Sorrentino’s been spending his days away from the shore.
He got hitched before hitting the big house
Some might call it “a hitchuation.”
Before showing up for prison in January, Sorrentino celebrated one of his last days of freedom by marrying longtime girlfriend Lauren Pesce on Nov. 1.

He’s rubbed shoulders with the Fyre Festival scammer and Jennifer Lawrence’s nudes hacker
Sorrentino isn’t the only famous face at the Federal Correctional Institution, Otisville in New York.
Other big names behind bars there include famed Fyre Festival hoaxer Billy McFarland and former Donald Trump attorney Michael Cohen, according to Insider and the New York Post. Forbes ranked the medium-security prison, about 80 miles from New York City, one of the 10 cushiest prisons in America in 2009.
Sorrentino’s “Jersey Shore” co-stars Vinny Guadagnino and DJ Pauly D opened up about their friend’s fellow inmates on “The Jenny McCarthy Show” in April.
“He’s in there with the guy from the Fyre Festival,” Guadagnino said. “And he’s in there with the guy that leaked Jennifer Lawrence’s nudes, that hacked her phone.”
“They play Scrabble together,” added Pauly D, whose real name is Paul DelVecchio.
As to what Sorrentino may have discussed with his fellow celeb criminals, his co-stars left it up to the imagination.
“Imagine what he’s learning in there from all these guys,” Guadagnino said.
“He’s learning how to hack phones,” DelVecchio joked.
DelVecchio also recalled spotting McFarland, whose Fyre Festival scam inspired multiple documentaries, while visiting Sorrentino in prison.
“It was cool,” he said of the encounter on “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen” in July. “Like, he was with his family visiting. We were visiting Mike, and his family was visiting him. I’m like, ‘This is so weird.’ “
Prison’s been packed with fan mail
Even in prison, Sorrentino’s mailbox has been busy.
Two days after his sentence began, Sorrentino’s wife offered an update through his Twitter account.
“Hi Everyone,it’s Lauren,” she wrote. “Mike would like to thank all of his fans worldwide for the unbelievable outpouring of love & support. We speak everyday & he’s doing great.”
According to the pair of tweets, Sorrentino has received so many letters from fans he can’t write back to them all.
“He’s received thousands of letters, he won’t be able to respond to everyone but wanted to express his gratitude … to each and everyone of you,” she wrote. “Thank you from the both of us; it is truly heartwarming to have this support during this time. Lots of Love, Michael & Lauren Sorrentino”
He’s been cheering on his castmates from jail
Guadagnino told ET in July that The Situation is keeping up with them from a prison TV.
“He looks refreshed. And his mindset never changes,” he said. “Like, we email him and I always think that one day he’s going to be like, ‘Not having a good day.’ He’s always making me laugh, he’s like, ‘Yo, I saw you on TMZ,’ because they watch TV and stuff. He’s still our biggest supporter.”
Guadagnino added his friend also keeps up his hairstyle along with his health.
“He’s doing better than me. He literally, like, eats well, he goes to the gym twice a day. He gets a haircut twice a week,” he said.
Snooki says he’s ‘probably gonna come out ripped’
Just because Sorrentino’s in prison doesn’t mean he’s stopped taking care of himself.
Co-star Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi told E! in April to watch out for The Situation’s post-prison bod.
“He’s in the gym a lot, so he’s probably gonna come out ripped,” she said. “You know, he’s not gonna be BDS anymore – Big Daddy Sitch. He’s gonna have his, probably, six-pack again. But he’s doing … he’s doing good in there.”
Polizzi also said Sorrentino’s been making the most of his situation.
“Mike’s having the time of his life,” she said. “It’s like he’s in a senior home. He’s playing bingo. He’s helping people recover in jail. We all talk to him through an email, so I talk to him, like, once a week.”
She added: “He’s helping other people out with sobriety. He loves bingo and all of his Scrabble games. And he’s working out.”
