Monty Don inundated with support after loss as Gardener’s World host marks new milestone
Gardeners’ World: Monty Don gives advice on planting for winter
Gardeners’ World presenter Monty Don shared an unearthed photo of his dog Nigel who died eight months ago. The BBC host paid tribute to his beloved pooch as he also gave fans an update on a new transformation.
The 65-year-old rarely shares insights into his family life but would often showcase his beloved Golden Retriever on Gardeners’ World.
In view of his 208,000 Twitter followers, Monty accompanied the heartwarming snap with the caption: “Taken a year ago today.”
Many social media users took to the comments section to share their support, after falling in love with Monty’s four-legged friend following Nigel’s regular appearances on the BBC gardening show.
One wrote: “Beautiful Nigel. We loved to watch him, we miss him and he inspired us to have our own little Golden Retriever.”

“Oh Monty! I’m just working my way through last year’s Gardeners World and the episode with Nigel was just on. Balled my eyes out, but what a lovely life you gave him and how lovely he will be remembered so fondly by so many,” another social media user added.
Last year, Monty revealed his beloved dog Nigel is now buried with “lots of tennis balls” at Longmeadow after being taken ill.
The Gardeners’ World host is also the proud owner of a retriever called Nellie, and a Yorkshire terrier, Pattie.
His tribute post comes as the BBC presenter took the opportunity to mark a new milestone after his garden was recently “ravaged” by disease.
The gardening expert recently took to Instagram and revealed that his once-blooming hedge had been destroyed by Box Blight.
But as we enter a new month, Monty shared his delight that his once “sullen” garden was now showing the first signs of spring.
In view of his 737,000 Instagram followers, the small-screen star shared a photo of his spring flowers from last year.

In a follow-up post, he revealed the plants that his wife Sarah had retrieved from their garden earlier in the day.
Monty wrote: “Sarah’s February posy picked from the garden this morning.”
One commented: “Looks as if spring is on its way.”
“Lovely Monty, so full of hope,” a second remarked, while another gushed: “They’re gorgeous.”
“Beautiful! We won’t have flowers here until April/May. Still in the midst of winter & under a thick blanket of snow here,” a fourth person added.
Meanwhile, Monty returns to viewers’ screens this week as the keen horticulturalist visits some of the most famous and interesting gardens in the US.
