Jose Mourinho has explained why Anthony Martial has been given a start against Brighton despite Marcus Rashford being fit enough to start.
The surprise inclusion in the line-up occurred after Alexis Sanchez’s injury.
But with Rashford given the No.10 and expected a big role this term and Romelu Lukaku now able to start, Martial’s inclusion was not an obvious one.
But Mourinho has explained the French forward returning from the cold is not to do with an improved performance in training, instead a tactical plan concerning the handling of Lukaku.
"Honestly, Alexis was going to play [instead of Martial]," Mourinho explained to Sky Sports. "But he had a problem, so we had to decide.
"We believe maybe Lukaku cannot play for 90 minutes, one striker and one on the left, then later you need a fresh player to replace Lukaku, so we protect Marcus for that reason."
