Mourinho’s drastic Plan B if he doesn’t sign a centre-back revealed

Jose Mourinho is desperate to land a centre-back at Manchester United ahead of the new campaign, which kicks off in just a few weeks time.

The Portuguese has made landing a defender a top priority this summer, but has been unusually quiet in the transfer window, making only one marquee signing in Fred.

The Reds Devils have been linked with a move for Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld in recent months, but United have yet to meet Spurs’ valuation for the player.

More recently United have shown interest in Leicester City defender Harry Maguire, who performed remarkably well for England at the World Cup.

But again the inflated price tag the Foxes have put on the player’s head – a figure of around £65million – has proved a stumbling block.

Currently at Manchester United Mourinho has five players capable of playing centre-back: Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo.

However, despite a clash of personalities last season, Bailly appears to be the only one Mourinho truly trusts – or, at least, his is the only name that stands out.

With the season fast approaching, the Reds Devils are running out of time to land a new centre-back to take them to the next level.

And Mourinho is now even considering utilising midfield enforcer Nemanja Matic in defence, to give it some much-needed power and stability.

Of course, the Portuguese would rather sign either Alderweireld and Maguire, but unless a figure can be agreed for either player before the start of the season then the Serbian could be lining up in United’s back-four come August 10.
