Oscar winner James Martin celebrates his birthday at the 2023 Academy Awards and reveals he’s returning to Starbucks job after An Irish Goodbye scoops a gong
Oscar-winning actor James Martin had a lot to celebrate at the 95th Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood on Sunday.
The star, who has Down’s Syndrome, celebrated his 31st birthday on stage after An Irish Goodbye scooped the gong for Best Live Action Short.
But despite the big win, James later revealed he would be returning to his Starbucks day job after his performance in the film.
Taking to the stage to accept the award, co-director Tom Berkeley led the glistening A-list crowd in singing Happy Birthday to James.
‘This award is actually the second most important thing about today because it’s James’ birthday,’ Tom explained.

He continued: ‘He’s out here in Hollywood wearing a leopard-print suit jacket. We would love to use the rest of our time up here to sing to James.’
The actor was moved by the heart-warming gesture and gave a thumbs up to the crowd, with fellow nominee Colin Farrell mirroring the gesture.
James Martin was in An Irish Goodbye in 2021, directed by Ross White and Tom Berkeley, playing a brother who is reunited with his sibling Turlough (Seamus O’Hara) due to his mother’s death.
He has been lauded for his acting in the flick, which has been nominated in the Best Short Film category.
But since the film, he has chosen to go back to Starbucks for now, before the Oscars next month.
He said: ‘I help out with all the customers. I’ve been doing that a long time. It’s nice.’
The actor keeps himself busy, also working in local restaurant Scalini’s as a chef.
The 95th Academy Awards is hosted by late night chat show host Jimmy Kimmel and are being held at the regular venue of the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for six Oscars including Best Picture, in a sign that Hollywood is finally listening to audiences and honoring box office hits instead of arthouse favorites.
The movie starring Tom Cruise was nominated for Best Picture along with Elvis, Avatar: The Way of Water, All Quiet On The Western Front and The Fabelmans.
However, Everything Everywhere All At Once led the pack with the most nominations with 11 and The Banshees of Inisherin earned nine nominations. The two films swept the Golden Globes earlier this month.
Elvis, by Baz Luhrmann, has eight nominations, including one for Austin Butler.
Best Actress at the Oscars will be a toss-up between Cate Blanchett in Tár and Michelle Yeoh, who won the award at the Golden Globes for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Ana De Armas also earned a nomination for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in Blonde.
While Cruise missed out on a nomination for Best Actor, Austin Butler (Elvis), Brendan Fraser (The Whale) and Bill Nighy (Living) all received nods.
All Quiet On The Western Front, a German-produced film, earned multiple nominations, as did Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, including Best Original Song.
Angela Bassett is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, as is Jamie Lee Curtis for Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Winners will be voted on by the roughly 10,000 actors, producers, directors and film craftspeople who make up the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The academy added more women and people of color to its ranks after the #OscarsSoWhite uproars of 2015 and 2016, and it increased membership from outside the United States.
