Furious Mauricio Pochettino tore into his players and admitted they lacked enough character to be considered genuine title contenders.
Tottenham boss Pochettino saw his Spurs side surrender the lead and he pulled no punches with his assessment of his side’s failings as he accused them of taking the game too lightly.
Pochettino said: “If you want to win you need to show that character, you need to defend well, maybe if you not play so well but you need to win this type of game if you want to be a contender at the end.
“Sometimes people talk about the perception but the reality was on the pitch and the reality is if you want to be a contender, today you need to win. And win easy. Because everything was ready to win the game.
“Today from the beginning we need to go there like a lion and try to score in every single action. I am disappointed but in the same way I am happy because that is the reality and sometimes you have to face the reality.
“I think it’s a very good wake-up call for everyone and [we can] listen more when people talk about the reality and not the perception. Today, it’s good to compare. And that is very painful.
“After four years in charge of Tottenham, it can happen. It’s so painful because after Manchester United, I told you I was so disappointed with the performance but today it’s so painful to concede two goals like this, it’s so painful that the first-half looks like a friendly game.
“Yes, very disappointed because it’s too difficult to understand. Before we talk, we need to show that we are contenders, and how you show? Winning. And the only way to win a game is to give your best.”
