Questlove To Direct New Sly Stone Documentary

MRC Non-Fiction announced on Friday (February 19) that Questlove will be directing a new documentary on funk titan Sly Stone.

According to the announcement, the doc will follow the musician “who was breaking all the rules at a time when doing so was extremely challenging, even dangerous. The pressure of explosive mainstream pop success and the responsibility of representing Black America forced him to walk the fine line of impossible expectations.”

“It goes beyond saying that Sly’s creative legacy is in my DNA…. It’s a Black musician’s blueprint…. To be given the honor to explore his history and legacy is beyond a dream for me,” Questlove said in a press release.

Questlove is producing the documentary with his partners Zarah Zohlman and Shawn Geehis under their Two One Five Entertainment banner. Common will be serving as an executive producer. The release date of the film has not yet been announced.

Sly Stone co-founded Sly and the Family Stone in San Francisco in 1966. Although the band enjoyed huge success, Sly Stone struggled due to substance misuse and has been trying hard to recover millions of dollars in royalty payments.
