Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson dies aged 61 after long cancer battle

Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson has died aged 61, her manager has confirmed.

The Swedish singer, who was famed in the late '80s for hits such as It Must Have Been Love and Listen To Your Heart, has passed away after a 17 year-long battle with brain cancer.

A statement written by her family who announced her sad passing on Tuesday 9 December said: “It is with great sadness that we have to announce that one of our biggest and most beloved artists is gone. Marie Fredriksson died on the morning of December 9 in the suites of her previous illness.”

It added: “Marie Fredriksson is most mourned by her husband Mikael Bolyos and their two children.”

The family added that Marie will be buried quietly with only their closest family present.
The late singer's agent Marie Dimberg confirmed her passing was linked to her cancer battle in a statement.
The statement read: “It is with great sadness that we have to announce that one of our biggest and most beloved artists is gone.

“Marie Fredriksson passed away on the morning of December 9 as a result of her previous illness.”

Marie leaves behind husband Edumnd Mikal Bolyos, 62, and two children, Inez, 26, and Oscar, 23.

Tributes for the singer have already began pouring in.

Marie's Roxette band member, Per Gessle led the public tributes as he tweeted: “Time goes by so quickly. It’s not that long ago we spent days+nights in my tiny apartment sharing impossible dreams. And what a dream we eventually got to share! I’m honoured to have met your talent+generosity. All my love goes to you+your family. Things will never be the same.” [sic]

Rockband Low Cut Connie wrote: “Roxette had some amazing songs. RIP Marie Fredriksson. Gorgeous star.”

While American music critic Stephen Hyden added: “Roxette is a really underrated pop band and ripe for rediscovery. Basically a harder-edged ABBA. LOOK SHARP! is one of the first albums I ever owned and it’s loaded with hits. RIP.”

The singer was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2002 after complaining of feeling unwell and fainting at home.

Doctors warned that she only had a 20% chance of survival, but she managed to recover after a long course of gruelling treatment including chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

As well as treatment, Marie also underwent surgery to remove the growth.

Speaking about her treatment in 2005, Marie said: “It’s been three very difficult years, [but] I’m healthy. I’m not receiving treatment any more.”
