Scholes names best Man United XI he played alongside – including major shock
Paul Scholes has named the best Manchester United XI he played alongside – with some notable omissions.
In a 700-game Old Trafford career, the midfielder played with some of the greatest footballers to ever don the famous United strip.
He won a staggering 11 Premier League titles, two FA Cups and two Champions Leagues during his time at the Theatre of Dreams.
Scholes represented the Red Devils for 20 years between 1993 and 2013 and was forced into some difficult decisions when asked to name his all-star side by MUTV.
He named Peter Schmeichel in goal – ahead of fellow legendary keeper Edwin van der Sar.
Gary Neville was the obvious choice at full-back while Jaap Stam got the nod over Nemanja Vidic to partner Rio Ferdinand in the centre of defence. Denis Irwin was selected over Patric Evra at left-back.
Scholes opted for a 4-3-3 and omitted himself from the midfield, instead selecting David Beckham and Ryan Giggs either side of Roy Keane.
Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruud van Nistelrooy complete an all-star front three.
Scholes was also quizzed on the current United side, which kicked off the new season with a 2-1 opening day win over Leicester at Old Trafford on Friday night.
The United legend doesn’t believe they have as much as Liverpool or Manchester City to challenge for the title.
"When you look at Manchester City, possibly Liverpool, I don’t think they [United] have the quality of those two teams at the minute," Scholes admitted.
"Liverpool have made some really good signings. United finished above them last season.
"I just don’t see United getting closer to City. City are a really good side, great manager, some great players, a way of playing that they all know about and Manchester United seem to be not too sure what’s going on.
"You don’t really know the team, you don’t really know the players, you don’t know how they’re going to perform from one week to the next. So I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see them challenging for the league this year."
