Strange things about Quentin Tarantino’s marriage
There’s no denying that Quentin Tarantino’s first love will always be filmmaking. The director is so celebrated in the world of cinema, even the Oxford English Dictionary added the word “Tarantinoesque” as an official entry in 2018. The ultimate cinephile, Tarantino always honors classic pieces of film in his flicks and once admitted to The Telegraph, “I have loved movies as the number one thing in my life so long that I can’t ever remember a time when I didn’t.” So, did this undeniable industry great miss being in a committed relationship? As he told the newspaper, “I’ve been alone most of my life … so I am very comfortable with my own company.”
That’s why it came as such a surprise when Tarantino married singer Daniella Pick in Los Angeles in November 2018! Considering he’s already such a private individual who mainly talks about his flicks during interviews, all ears have been perked about his newfound romance. We’ve done some digging, so press pause on Pulp Fiction as we take a look at the strangest things about Quentin Tarantino’s marriage.
Age is but a number in Quentin Tarantino's marriage
Up until he started dating Daniella Pick, the women Quentin Tarantino had been publicly linked to were closer to him in age. In fact, the youngest of his former ladies was acclaimed director Sofia Coppola, who was eight years his junior. When he met Pick, however, it seemed this particular societal norm flew out the window.
Clearly living by the saying “age is but a number,” Tarantino and Pick certainly have a significant one between them — 20 years, to be exact. With such a big age gap, perhaps that’s why it took them so long to seal the deal and start dating after they met. As revealed by the Daily Mail, the duo were first introduced to one another in 2009, when the director was promoting his film, Inglourious Basterds. At the time, the violence-making aficionado was 46, while Pick was just 26. Although they kept in touch throughout the years, they didn’t necessarily hit it off romantically right away, instead opting to begin their relationship in 2016 — with Tarantino popping the question just one year later.
Tarantino's engagement party and wedding were … Pulp Fiction reunions?
Quentin Tarantino and Daniella Pick’s engagement party in September 2017 would have definitely warmed the hearts of any die-hard Pulp Fiction fans, considering it was a “reunion” of sorts for the movie, according to People. Attendees of the private soiree included Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Uma Thurman, and Harvey Keitel. (We’re really hoping at least someone recreated the flick’s famous dance sequence – especially Thurman.)
Another interesting tidbit about the party? It included soon-to-be disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein, Tarantino’s once-frequent collaborator. Per People, Weinstein hosted the event along with his now-ex-wife, Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman. Page Six reports that he also gave a toast, declaring, “When you make a movie like Inglourious Basterds, not only did you get an Oscar but you got Daniella.” Just weeks after the engagement party, Hollywood was shaken by the infamous Weinstein scandal – as well as Tarantino’s statement on the matter. “I knew enough to do more than I did,” he said of the allegations to The New York Times.
As for their November 2018 wedding itself? The happy couple decided to go against doing anything flashy and kept the whole affair under wraps. A source dished to E! News, “The ceremony was inside in front of a small group of family and friends … There were only about 20 people and it was very intimate and private.”
Daniella Pick most likely has great feet
One of Hollywood’s most long-standing rumors is that of Quentin Tarantino’s supposed foot fetish. The award-winning director certainly doesn’t shy away from focusing on feet in his flicks, sometimes making it more apparent than others: The foot massage discussion between Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta in Pulp Fiction, the shots of Uma Thurman’s toes in Kill Bill and Diane Kruger’s shoe in Inglourious Basterds … the list is seemingly endless!
It’s not just movies where one can catch a glimpse of the director’s alleged quirk. We’ve seen hints of it in real life, too. According to the Daily Mail, Uma Thurman once decided to celebrate Tarantino in the most Tarantino way possible while delivering a toast in his honor — by letting him drink champagne out of her Christian Louboutin black velvet heels. If that’s not enough goss for you, the media outlet reports that there was also an alleged incident outlined in a viral email written by a Berkeley grad, who recalled “the weirdest ten minutes of [her] life — having [her] feet made out with by an Oscar-winning filmmaker while he pleasured himself.”
Amid the ongoing claims that Tarantino may have a thing for feet, one might assume that Daniella Pick has a fine pair herself. It’s certainly not the first time it’s been discussed either: Even running a simple Google search on Pick’s feet will bring up several bizarre fan pages all focusing on her little piggies.
Quentin Tarantino will never give up his first love
Quentin Tarantino hasn’t been romantically linked with too many ladies, mainly because his focus has always been creating the epic blood-fests we see on silver screens worldwide. Before Pick, however, he may have come close to wanting to settle down with actress Mira Sorvino. According to People, the Hollywood duo dated from 1995 to 1998, with a source telling the mag, “It seemed like they were very much in love.” So, what went wrong? The actress herself revealed to the publication, they “still love each other very much,” but mutually decided to end things. “At this point in our lives, we should not be together.”
It was probably for the best too, as the director’s first love will always be filmmaking. He once even revealed to GQ (via USA Today), “When I’m doing a movie, I’m not doing anything else. It’s all about the movie. I don’t have a wife. I don’t have a kid. Nothing can get in my way.” Pretty intense, no?
After marrying Daniella Pick, however, it appears the Knoxville-born movie fanatic is singing a different tune. According to AP News, during a press conference for Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood at the Cannes Film Festival, Tarantino gushed, “I just got married six months ago … I have never done that before — and now I know why: I was waiting for the perfect girl.” Aww!
Tarantino's wife is famous in Israel
How many husbands can say their wife is a beautiful Israeli pop starlet? Not many. As it turns out, Daniella Pick has been well-known in Israel for quite some time now, thanks to her flourishing singing career. According to People, she was first put on the map in 2005, when she appeared on the Eurovision contest with her sister, Sharona. After a year, the girls broke up, causing Daniella to go solo and mature her sound. When she’s not working on new tunes, Pick is also a model, which is often highlighted on her Instagram page.
However, if you thought Quentin Tarantino’s wife was famous, wait until you hear about her dad. One of Israel’s biggest pop stars of the ’70s, Svika Pick is beloved by many. What jump-started his career was his leading role in the Israeli production of Hair in 1970. According to the talent agency Teev, he’s since released hit after hit, even winning Eurovision “with his song ‘Diva’ which was number 1 on MTV and a smash-success throughout the word.”
In recent years, Svika Pick has starred in his own reality TV show and has even been a judge on Israel’s version of American Idol. Per The Jerusalem Post, he received the Life Achievement Award from the Union of Israeli Performing Artists in 2018. We’re definitely assuming talent runs in this family.
Could Daniella Pick be Tarantino's new muse?
Every great filmmaker has his own muse. It’s a sentiment that even Quentin Tarantino himself has echoed in the past, using his Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill starlet, Uma Thurman, as an example. Gushing about her to Rolling Stone, the director once revealed, “It’s just this cool connection that happened while we were doing Pulp Fiction. I mean, von Sternberg had Marlene Dietrich, Hitchcock had Ingrid Bergman, André Téchiné had Catherine Deneuve.” He went on, “It’s a special bond that I’m proud to have, and hopefully, one day, people will reference me and Uma like they do the others.”
Now that Tarantino’s married to Pick, however, has he found new inspiration in his songbird? Perhaps he has. The director even gave his wife her first significant on-screen role in his 2019 flick, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. Considering Tarantino has famously said he plans on making 10 movies in total and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood was his ninth, maybe he’ll gift Pick with an even more prominent role in his final pièce de résistance?
Did this married pair fight over having kids?
As previously mentioned, it’s no secret that Quentin Tarantino is in love with filmmaking. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he dished, “There was a time about 13 years ago that I had baby fever, that I really thought about having kids … in so far as people telling me what I great father I would be. And that was very moving.” He added, “But that fever has passed. I had baby fever, and the fever broke. It doesn’t mean that I don’t want to have kids, but right now, perfectly thinking, I want to do the 10 movies — without distractions.”
Considering Tarantino got serious with Pick before he even finished his 10 flicks, it’s no wonder the duo allegedly fought about having kids before they got married. According to Page Six, the now-happy couple reportedly used to argue while they were still dating, with Pick apparently skipping out on her A-list beau’s 54th birthday in Los Angeles. “She is not in LA. She is fighting with Quentin,” an insider claimed. “He wants [to be married] for a few years and then have children. She wants a baby now. She doesn’t want to wait.”
It appears that her reported persistence may have worked wonders, however. At the time of this writing in 2019, Tarantino and Pick are expecting their first child together. In an exclusive statement to People, the pair announced that they are “very delighted” by the baby news.
Will children force Tarantino into retirement?
Is there a chance that having children will change Quentin Tarantino’s priorities? When the director appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in July 2019, fans were surprised to hear him suddenly say something none of us were used to hearing. “I just got married; I wanna have kids,” Tarantino confessed. Wait, what? “I’m not saying I’ll just disappear like J.D. Salinger,” he continued. “I’ll be a writer … I like the idea of making 10 motion pictures. And then boom, that’s it, that’s done, the filmography is locked.”
Considering Tarantino tends to throw everything else out the window when it’s movie-making time, would a baby be a distraction to his final feature flick? Perhaps he’ll do something else instead, like pivot to children’s movies. As it turns out, the director isn’t necessarily a stranger to them. In fact, he once revealed on The Graham Norton Show that Uma Thurman’s portion of his infamous Pulp Fiction dance sequence drew inspiration from Duchess in The Aristocats. Who would have thought?
Tarantino and Pick live a modest home life
Considering he makes such extravagant flicks, it’s somewhat surprising to know that Quentin Tarantino and Daniella Pick’s home life is … quite normal. While speaking to Pnai Plus (via The Jerusalem Post), the Israeli starlet revealed that their life in Los Angeles is pretty low key. “We are very family-oriented, we love to be at home, to go out to dinner [and] to watch movies, both at home and at theaters,” she said. “Aside from that, I love to cook and invite friends over, and I also cook every day. Quentin really loves my cooking and I make things that I know from home and also new things, I love the kitchen. We spend a lot of time during the day together, laughing, talking. He’s a gentleman, romantic, funny and a hunk … He’s a genius and an incredible husband.” Cute!
While these two certainly seem to live a modest life away from the Tinseltown limelight, it’s possible they might draw the line with certain everyday activities — like taking cabs. According to the Mirror, the violence-loving director was once bitten on his nipple by a taxi driver after the two got into a fight over an offensive comment the cabbie allegedly made over Tarantino’s date. Um, yikes! Tarantino may be a true and honorable gentleman toward whomever he’s taking out, but we wouldn’t be surprised if he’s stuck with some pricier modes of transportation since the headline-making incident.
When Quentin Tarantino shoots a movie, it affects their personal lives, too
In Quentin Tarantino’s world, movies come first. As producer David Heyman told Metro about the set of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, “Quentin doesn’t like visual effects, he’s very analog, no mobile phones.” Actor Timothy Olyphant echoed this statement on The Rich Eisen Show, explaining that the old school director will even fire people for using their cell phones on set.
This obsession with movie-making translates into his home life, as well. “When Quentin shoots a movie, it’s a big deal,” Daniella Pick admitted to Pnai Plus (via The Jerusalem Post). “Obviously, I take an active part in it, and [it influences] all the atmosphere at home. It’s a very intensive half a year and every day is very important. It’s like being with someone who is training for the Olympics, or as Quentin always says, it’s like climbing Everest.” While the thought may be terrifying, Ms. Tarantino then went on to gush, “He is so charming, caring and professional. He makes everyone feel great on the set. It made me feel really proud to see that.”
Considering Tarantino gave his wife a minor role in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, it’s nice to see that the filmmaker’s been able to incorporate his two greatest loves into doing what he does best. We love a collaborative celebrity marriage!
