The Weeknd Facing Legal Battle Over ‘Starboy’

A poet, singer and songwriter named Yasminah has filed a lawsuit against The Weeknd and Daft Punk alleging that their 2016 hit song “Starboy” is actually a rip off of her song “Hooyo.”

In the lawsuit, the singer claims she co-wrote her song “Hooyo” and released the track in 2009, seven years before the release of “Starboy,” TMZ reports. Although the lyrics in the song are different, the tempo, key and melody of the tracks are similar. Yasminah also says that there’s a clap on the second and fourth beat that is identical to the one in her track.

The report says she is seeking at least $5 million in damages from The Weeknd and Daft Punk.

Yasminah also says that 2 of her producers had earlier threatened to sue them, however, they settled out of court. But, Yasminah says she never got a cut of those settlements.

“Starboy” was the first single from The Weeknd’s third studio album of the same name. The song had topped the charts in countries such as Canada, France, Netherlands, New Zealand and Sweden, as well as on the US Billboard Hot 100.
