Sir Rod Stewart, 76, has opened up on how his relationship with wife of 14 years Penny Lancaster, 50, fared during the coronavirus lockdown. The star shared a candid insight into his marriage while speaking to Zoe Ball on BBC Radio 2 this morning.
Rod appeared on Zoe’s Breakfast Show to discuss his new song, One More Time, from his forthcoming album, The Tears of Hercules.
After chatting about music, Zoe took the opportunity to quiz Sir Rod on whether he and Penny managed to spend quality time together at home during the pandemic.
Rod was quick to admit that due to the couple having a “fairy large house”, they often would go “hours and hours” without saying hello to one another each day.
The rocker said: “Oh yeah, I have a fairly large house and so there would be hours and hours before we’d say hello.”
Sir Rod went on to share that he and his other half were focusing on different things during the national lockdowns.
The star, who spent 23 years building an impressive model train set, said he would be engrossed in his hobby, while Penny would tend to the goats they own together.
Sir Rod told Zoe: “I’d be working on my trains and she’d be feeding the goats over yonder.
“So it would be ages before we’d speak to each other.”
Sharing a positive side to their lack of interaction around the house, Rod added: “So we never get on each other’s nerves.
“Well, that’s a lie, we do sometimes!” He laughed.
Zoe chimed: “Well, I think all good relationships there has to be moments. It can’t all be perfect all the time, we have to get grumpy and have words.”
Rod and Penny began dating in 1999 before tying the knot in 2007.

Sir Rod previously opened up on the time they went through a brief split, in an unearthed 2013 interview.
The singer explained the break-up inspired him to cover a Tom Waits song on his album Time.
Speaking to Australian magazine Life, the Maggie May singer said: “I cover Tom Waits’ Picture In A Frame.
“Penny and I broke up for two weeks and the song is about that time.
“I asked her for a photo of herself in a frame so that I could see her when I went to bed and when I woke up.”
The star has had two previous marriages, one with Alana Stewart and the other with Rachel Hunter.
He added in his interview: “I have taken a lot of risks when it comes to relationships but I have never gambled or smoked – women don’t like that.
“You have to take the good with the bad, and women prefer when you’re truthful.
“I have always loved women, won some, lost some, but it’s not about the magic touch, it’s about being a better person and a good listener.
“I met Penny in my fifties and if I had not learnt by that point in my life I was never going to.”
