THIS weekend I was reminded how good laughing is for my mental and physical health. It was our annual cycling event in Cornwall, the Hilly Hundred, and this year I was not taking part.

That’s not why I was laughing (though I did feel ever so smug not to be on a bike this year, as did my nether regions).

It was because of the joyful people we had taking part, as well as those volunteering to ensure all our riders felt supported and got to the end safely.

I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard I produced actual tears.

Laughing is so good for you. It increases oxygen intake and releases those happy hormones, endorphins, which boost your immune system to help you fight all sorts of illness.

I’ve been stressed recently as we are gearing up to our busiest ever Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

I am again organising our annual music and comedy event which I’m trying to make special as it’s our 10th birthday, so my mind has been more frazzled recently.

As a result I’ve felt more lethargic and in more pain. But this weekend I felt more buoyant than ever, and that’s all because of laughing and that enormous sense of pride I felt when all our 44 cyclists crossed the finish line.
