Here’s why facials for your body are this summer’s hot new trend — and all the best high street products

“Facial skincare is so effective that the skin on our bodies is now starting to look older than the skin on our faces, making us realise that anti-ageing body products are just as important as those for our faces,” explains Nichola Joss, Decléor skin expert.

Don’t want to splash out on multiple expensive salon treatments?

We’ve got the latest souped-up serums and all-over peels to help get your body summer-ready at home.

Super Serums

The face version has long been a staple item in our skincare regimes, but now body serum is hot on its heels.

“It serves the same function, containing active ingredients that penetrate through the epidermis to deeper layers of the skin, addressing specific concerns,” explains Maria Machera, international marketing director at Anne Semonin.

And it goes hand-in-hand with your everyday body moisturiser. “A body serum should be applied daily before moisturiser, focusing on the chest area, the underside of your arms, stomach and inner thighs, as these areas suffer most from the ageing process,” she advises.

Moisturisers with Muscle

Gone are the days of body lotions that smell nice and do little else.

Today’s moisturisers are hard workers. “Often, they no longer solely hydrate,” says Maria.

“Now they contain added ingredients for anti-ageing and skin renewal.”

Look for ingredients such as hydrating hyaluronic acid, collagen, retinol and soothing essential oils to get the most out of your daily moisturiser.

Nichola adds: “Just as you would target specific areas of your face such as your T-zone or around your eyes, you need to do the same on your body. That’s why bust-firming creams should be a key part of your daily routine to firm, tone and protect delicate tissue.”

Power Peels

Exfoliating two to three times a week is the key to a smoother, more even complexion, and the same applies to the skin on your bod.

But while some scrubs can feel scratchy and cause inflammation, the latest trend in exfoliation – acid peels – is far gentler and penetrates deeper into the skin.

Radical Skincare Express Delivery Enzyme Peel gently dissolves dead skin instead of stripping it for better hydration and less irritation“A body peel works in exactly the same way as a facial peel,” Nichola says.

“It removes dead skin cells, exfoliates the surface of skin and provides a deep clean, while also adding much-needed actives such as AHAs and antioxidants.”

Wholesome Oils

“A body oil hydrates, boosts radiance and helps to plump skin, giving it a more youthful appearance,” explains Nichola.

But while in the past oils could feel heavy and sticky under clothes, the latest formulations work hard not to overload the skin.

“It’s best to massage oil into the skin every night after bathing,” Nichola says.

Right now, there’s a trend for vitamin-based oils, and because dermatology experts say that applying vitamins topically is just as effective for your skin as swallowing them, the latest products are just what the doctor ordered (kind of).
