Jennifer Lawrence Photo Sparks Fury

Jennifer Lawrence has found herself in the middle of a sexism debate after a recent photo call.

The 27-year-old actress posed alongside the co-stars of her upcoming movie Red Sparrow in an outside shot for the press last week. While Jennifer wore only a black floor-length dress and sandals, Jeremy Iorns, Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts and Francis Lawrence were all dressed for winter, sporting coats and boots.

The temperature in London at the time was roughly seven degrees, turning what should’ve been a seemingly innocent snap for the media into a debate on Twitter.

“It must be about 3 degrees in London,” one user wrote. “Cold enough that the bloke actors have to wear coats and scarves to their press call and yet poor Jennifer Lawrence is wearing a small amount of fabric some might call a dress.” Another user pointed out the lack of equality highlighted in the photograph. “True equality means either Jennifer Lawrence getting a coat, or Jeremy Irons having to pose for a photo call in assless chaps.”

Others speculated that press engagements often require staff to do several different things throughout the day, and Lawrence was most likely dressed appropriately for the majority of the occasions – just not this photo.  While her fans may have seen it as a negative display of sexism in the industry, Lawrence took to Facebook the next day to share her shock at the uproar.

“Wow. I don’t really know where to get started on this ‘Jennifer Lawrence wearing a revealing dress in the cold’ controversy,” the Winter’s Bone star said. “This is not only utterly ridiculous, I am extremely offended. That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I’m going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf? I was outside for 5 minutes. I would have stood in the now for that dress because I love fashion and that was my choice. This is sexist. This is ridiculous. This is not feminism.”
