Meghan Markle go-to detox is a 21-day Clean Program that ‘boosts energy’ and ‘helps her sleep soundly’

The Duchess of Sussex has spoken in the past about her love of the Clean Program, which is one of Hollywood’s most popular detoxes.

The program is a 21-day created by Dr Alejandro Junger that focuses on undoing bad eating habits and developing healthier ones.

Each day you have to drink two shakes and one meal, along with supplements and probiotics.

Aside from the duchess herself, it has numerous celebrity fans, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Naomi Campbell.

Meghan gushed to Rejuvage: “I met Dr Junger and his CEO Dhru Purohit a few years ago, after suffering from a lifetime of debilitating migraines and ENT problems. Let me just say this – my life has never been the same.”

The Clean Program suggests you have a “12-hour window” between dinner and breakfast the next day, which prompts your body to go into a “deep detox mode”.

This may mean having your evening shake for dinner at 7pm and not having your breakfast shake until after 7am.

However, the website insists: “Our cleanse is not designed to make you go hungry.”

It adds: “Instead, during the 21 days, you will undo bad dietary habits, unveil hidden food allergies, build a healthy eating base, and gain more energy.”

For your meals, you are encouraged to fill up on veggies, fruits, lean proteins and healthy fats, and to avoid alcohol, coffee, soda, processed food, gluten and dairy.

Week one is when the initial detox takes place, and the website warns you may feel “tired and sluggish” during this stage.

Week two is when you should start “sleeping more soundly” and feeling more energised, and by week three you should be “clear-headed”, “lighter” and will have “habitualised this clean lifestyle”.

The website says benefits of the cleanse include boosting your skin, sleep, digestion, energy, weight loss, and improving mental clarity.

The pros may sound appealing, but the program certainly doesn’t come cheap and will set you back £372.92 for the 21 days.

That’s probably pocket money when you were a Hollywood actress and are now in the royal family.

Back in 2015, Meghan told The Chalkboard that one of her go-to breakfasts is having the Clean Cleanse vanilla powder in a smoothie, with blueberries.

But what the health experts reckon?

Scott Keatley, R.D.N, of Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy in New York City told Women’s Health: “I'm not a fan of this cleanse.

“It is an elimination diet that focuses on supplements full of herbs, shake powder, and a cookbook for your one real meal a day.

“They suggest laxatives as well as the cleanse, which just screams disordered eating.”

Julie Upton, R.D., co-founder of nutrition website Appetite for Health, added: “This is a very pricey and gimmicky program that doesn't appear to be backed by any science, has myriad unsupported health claims, and I would suspect will be targeted by FDA for their unsubstantiated claims.”


Eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of maintaining good health, and can help you feel your best.

This means eating a wide variety of foods in the right proportions, and consuming the right amount of food and drink to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.

The Eatwell Guide shows that to have a healthy, balanced diet, people should try to:

  • eat 5 A Day
  • base meals on starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice or pasta
  • have some dairy or dairy alternatives (such as soya drinks)
  • eat some beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein
  • choose unsaturated oils and spreads, eaten in small amounts
  • drink plenty of fluids

With her charity work, previous acting roles and now transitioning to life in the royal family, Meghan also definitely likes to stay active.

She is a yoga fanatic (often doing candlelit classes) which is not surprising giving her mum is an instructor.

And previously she has attributed her lean body to her Pilates classes with personal trainer Heather Dorak.

Nobody rocks a pair of denim cut-offs like Meghan, and her princess-perfect pins are probably because one of her favourite exercises is a six-mile run.

She hones her glutes at the supermodels’ favourite workout The Skinny Bitch Collective, founded by trainer Russell Bateman.

She also swears by the core-toning exercises on personal trainer Tracy Anderson’s workout DVDs, loved by Gwyneth Paltrow and Kim Kardashian.
