This is why Meghan Markle stood BEHIND Kate Middleton for her Buckingham Palace balcony debut

The new Duchess of Sussex, 36, stood behind her sister-in-law Kate Middleton, also 36, when she watched the Trooping of the Colour flypast on Saturday.

During Kate's Trooping of the Colour debut in 2011, she stood to the left of the balcony – in a less prominent position than recent years – but was still firmly in the front.

And Meghan's positioning behind her is all down to a royal "pecking order", according to royal experts.

“She was not as prominent perhaps as some people might have expected, but there’s a pecking order,” Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, told PEOPLE.

“There was no slight intended, but William being the older, more senior brother would go out (first) with his wife.”

But a royal source confirmed there is no set positioning, and it would have ultimately been Meghan's decision to move towards the back.

The unnamed source told PEOPLE: “(It) would have come from her. There’s no one laying this out, telling her where to stand.

"And there were a lot of kids who everyone would want at the front.”

The Queen took pride of price in the front centre of the balcony, but there's no surprises there.

The Trooping of the Colour marks Her Maj's official birthday, which always takes place on the second Saturday in June. Her actual birthday is April 21.

In more royal news, this is the sweet family name Meghan can call the Queen now.
