Mum devastated to find out niece has given her baby the same name as her own four-week-old daughter – but who is in the wrong?

Taking to Mumsnet, the “hurt” mum caused a debate when she asked if she was being unreasonable to be upset over the situation.

The British mum, known by the username GreyEyed, wrote: “My daughter was born 4 weeks ago (still in hospital) as she arrived premature.

“Niece gave birth yesterday morning and named her the same name (although I'm putting a long version on the BC [birth certificate]).

“I'm a bit hurt tbh. AIBU? [Am I being unreasonable?]”

Her story split opinion on the forum, with some saying they would react the same, and others saying she doesn’t have a monopoly on a name.

One backed her up and said she had every right to be upset.

They said: “This would absolutely irritate me. Yes of course no owns a name blah blah but seriously where’s the originality in using a very new baby’s name who you will see frequently. Also a baby who is still in hospital. A bit off i think.”

And one commented: “It’s a ridiculous thing to do. I’d be really cross. Make sure your dd [darling daughter] isn’t dumped with the rubbish version so they can be told apart.”

However, some said that the mum shouldn’t get angry about the situation.

One wrote: “If your daughter was prem then your niece would have probably used the name before you if your daughter was born term, and had probably picked it out ages ago.

“Maybe it was you that stole 'her' baby name op? Just a thought.”

Another added: “Did she know in advance what you were naming your child? If she had a name picked for AGES and only just found out 4 days ago that you had the same one, then you can't really blame her for going with it.”

And one reasoned: “It would annoy me but maybe the children will like sharing a name?”

So what do you think? Would you be fine with this happening?

Previously, another Mumsnet user raged after local woman ‘steals’ her ‘unusual baby name’… so who’s in the right?

Meanwhile, a furious Mumsnet user found her nanny left her baby to cry herself to sleep.

And, a mum was slammed by her sister for letting her husband put their kids to bed twice a week because “mummy should do it”.
