Most of us have vowed never to drink again after one too many the night before, and the sight which greets us in the mirror the next day is never pretty.
A grey face, bloodshot eyes and breakouts often accompany a heavy drinking session, and we instantly regret what all the alcohol does to our skin.
In a bid to reverse the negative effects alcohol has on our body, a nutritionist has shared their top tips to keep you looking and feeling your best – and still be able to enjoy a cheeky tipple.
If you know you’re going out, nutritionist Steve Macari told Harper’s Bazaar that you should start gearing up for your session the night before.
He said: “In addition, you should be hydrating all day prior to your party with water and coconut water.
“Add a pinch of sea salt to your water bottle to boost the mineral (electrolyte) content."
And you should eat a balanced meal with lots of protein and fat to help protect your stomach from the damaging side-effects of alcohol.
When the party has wound down and you’re safely in your Uber – resist that kebab.
Instead you should be reaching for a different type of food, fruit.
In particular you should stock up on ones which are high in fructose, such as grapes or apples.
Steve explains why they help combat a hangover, saying: “Fructose is a type of sugar that helps your liver detoxify alcohol more efficiently, meaning less of a hangover.”
An entire orchard is needed in that case.
The next day
It goes without saying to try and get as much sleep as possible when you’ve been drinking.
And two things help you to feel more human after dragging yourself out of bed – brushing your teeth and taking a shower.
Make sure you give your body a good scrub to get the circulation going, helping you to process alcohol faster.
Steve also advises working some beetroot into your lunch, as it helps with liver function.
And he shares his recipe for the ultimate hangover drink, 235 ml. water, 118 ml. coconut water, 118 ml. orange juice and a pinch of sea salt.
