This has not been the best week for rapper 21 Savage. Early Sunday morning he was detained by ICE after being accused of overstaying his visa.
Previously believed to be from Atlanta, GA, ICE revealed that the rapper whose real name is She’yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph is actually a UK citizen.
“Mr. Abraham-Joseph was taken into ICE custody as he is unlawfully present in the U.S. and also a convicted felon,” Brian Cox, a spokesman for ICE told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

ICE claimed that the rapper was actually from Britain and had come here with his family in 2005. The family then overstayed their work visas.
21 Savage’s lawyer confirmed that his client’s family had, in fact, overstayed their visas and that the rapper was then “left without legal status through no fault of his own.”
“This is a civil law violation, and the continued detention of Mr. Abraham-Joseph serves no other purpose than to unnecessarily punish him and try to intimidate him into giving up his right to fight to remain in the United States,” his attorney Charles Kuck said in a statement regarding the incident. “Obviously, our client is not a flight risk, as he is widely recognizable, and a prominent member of the music industry. Likewise, Mr. Abraham-Joseph is clearly not a danger to the community, and in fact, his contributions to local communities and schools that he grew up in are examples of the type of immigrant we want in America.”

Celebrities React
Celebrities have had lots of mixed emotions about 21 Savage’s possible deportation.
Controversial news reporter Tomi Lahren tweeted a sarcastic response to the news.
“I got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight ICE agents ready to deport ya,” she tweeted mimicking his song “Bank Account.”
To which rapper Cardi B responded, saying “Don’t make me get my leash,” referencing her earlier comment that she would “dog walk” Lahren during the government shutdown.
Lahren responded to Cardi, commenting on the state of the country’s immigration system.
“Here’s something maybe we can agree on, our immigration system is broken,” she tweeted. “We need to keep our country safe while also making sure people who work hard, contribute and don’t leech off the system are able to LEGALLY immigrate here.”
Rapper Nicki Minaj also tweeted at Lahren, jumping to 21 Savage’s defense.

Singer Demi Lovato also commented on the situation, tweeting, “So far 21 savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl.” She has since deleted her Twitter account.
Other stars, jumped into the discussion, shaming others for making light of the situation.
“ALL THE MEMES AND S*** AINT FUNNY WHEN SOMEBODY GOING THROUGH SOME,” Rapper Offset tweeted. “PRAYING FOR MY DAWG AINT S*** FUNNY HIS FANILY [sic] DEPENDING ON HIM.”

Kuck has said that his client has never hidden his heritage from the government and even applied for a U visa in 2017, according to The Huffington Post.
Kuck and his team are continuing to fight for the rapper’s release.
“Mr. Abraham-Joseph has US citizen children that he supports and is eligible for relief from deportation,” Kuck said. “We and he will fight for his release, for his family, and his right to remain in our country. No one would expect less from him.”
If his lawyers fail and he is deported, 21 Savage could be banned from returning to the United States for up to 10 years.
