Another Pasquale Barbaro jailed after ice, cannabis found in cereal box
A man with the same infamous name as others killed in Australia's underworld has been jailed after police found drugs inside a cereal box in his garage.
Pasquale Barbaro, 30, shares the same name as at least three men who were killed, most notably the Pasquale Barbaro who was shot dead alongside Jason Moran as the pair watched children play football in 2003, during Melbourne's gangland war.
An older Pasquale Barbaro was killed in Brisbane in 1990, another was shot dead in Sydney in 2016 and a fourth was jailed for at least 30 years in 2012 over his role in importing into Australia a huge stash of ecstasy pills hidden in tomato tins.
On Monday, County Court judge Michael McInerney jailed 30-year-old Pasquale Barbaro – a concreter also known as Pat or Patrick – after police found one kilogram of ice, 925 grams of MDMA and 186 grams of cannabis inside a cereal box within a garage wall in his Taylors Hill home on June 13, 2018.
Police also found a pistol in a cupboard in the kitchen. Officers were at the time investigating a drug trafficking ring in Melbourne's western suburbs.
Barbaro, who is a part of the crime clan of the same name, was on Monday jailed for seven years and 10 months, to serve five years before he is eligible for parole.
The start of his jail term comes just weeks before the expected birth of his fourth child.
Judge McInerney acknowledged the impact of Barbaro being away from his partner and their children but said his crimes were serious enough to warrant a jail term. The judge also found Barbaro grew up in a dysfunctional and chaotic home.
Barbaro's appearance in court for his plea hearing last month came just days after he, his brother and three friends were fined by police for breaching Victoria's coronavirus restrictions, by gathering in a Melbourne apartment last Wednesday.
The men told police they were together for a "catch-up", prosecutor Yildana Hardjadibrata said, and one was found in possession of cannabis.
Since his 2018 arrest on the drugs charges, Barbaro had undergone treatment for a drug addiction and mental-health problems.
He pleaded guilty to trafficking a commercial quantity of a drug of dependence, two counts of drug trafficking and possessing a handgun without a licence.
Four other men arrested at the same time are to stand trial.
