Body found in search for swimmer, 22, who vanished in River Thames in heatwave

A body has been found in the search for a 22-year-old man who disappeared while swimming in the River Thames during the heatwave.

The man failed to resurface after taking a dip with friends in Shadwell Basin, Wapping, just after 6pm yesterday.

Police are also still desperately searching for two others seen going into the Thames and disappearing from sight last night.

Divers have been scouring the river at three different points since officers were first alerted.

The Metropolitan Police said a second person went missing at Waterloo Bridge and a third near Kingston High Street.

They said in a statement yesterday: "We have responded this evening to 3 separate incidents of people seen to enter water and disappear from sight.

"These were a man at 6.05 in Shadwell Basin, a person at 8.30 at Waterloo Bridge and a man at 8.35 in Thames near Kingston High St."

Of the incident involving the 22-year-old, they added: "Police were called… at 18:06 to Garnet Street (Shadwell Basin) to a report of a man seen to enter the water.

"The man, believed to be aged 22 years, was swimming with friends and has not resurfaced."

It comes as parts of the UK are in the midst of a heatwave, with temperatures across England exceeding 30C (86F) on Tuesday.

Yesterday, a body was found at a water park after reports that a swimmer had disappeared in a lake in Gloucestershire.

Emergency services were called to Cotswold Water Park, near Cirencester, at around 1.40pm.
