Brand behind Meghan Markle’s jeans reveals they sold out completely

‘It’s like winning the fashion lotto’: Founder of company behind Meghan Markle’s black jeans reveals they sold out completely within HOURS of her wearing them

  • The Duchess of Sussex wore a $199 black jeans by Outland Denim in Dubbo
  • She sparked a shopping frenzy when she chose to wear the jeans
  • Within hours of the appearance, they were completely sold out online
  • Gold Coast founder James Bartle said the exposure put his label on the map

The pregnant Duchess of Sussex has sparked a shopping frenzy by wearing a pair of locally designed black jeans during a trip to country Australia.

Meghan Markle donned a pair of Outland Denim jeans when she visited Dubbo, northwestern New South Wales, with her husband Prince Harry on Wednesday.

And within hours of her appearance on the second day of their royal tour, the $199 skinny high-rise jeans – dubbed ‘the Harriet’ – were completely sold out online.

Outland Denim’s founder James Bartle said the exposure of the royal mother-to-be wearing his clothes had put his fashion label on the map.

Perfect model: The Duchess of Sussex, who is expecting her first child with husband Prince Harry, teamed the $145 (£110) Serena ‘boss’ blazer with a classic white shirt and a $199 Outland Denim jeans combo for an outing in Dubbo on Wednesday

‘It really is like winning fashion lotto,’ Mr Bartle told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

‘We would normally sell about 10 pair a day through our online site and we have sold out of that line and sold a lot of other ones as well.’

However, the Meghan followers have not missed out entirely, as they can pre-order now to be placed in a priority queue to receive a pair when they are back in stock.

Mr Bartle launched Outland Denim after a chance encounter with an anti-trafficking group inspired him to open up a factory in Cambodia to offer job opportunities for young women from remote villages.

Without such job opportunities, the girls and young women can fall prey to human traffickers.

The fashion brand also says it sources the most ethically and environmentally sound raw materials, from organic cotton pocket linings to recycled packaging.

‘Meghan Markle stands for women’s rights and our brand stands for things she stands for so I guess that’s why they [Meghan’s stylist] chose us,’ Mr Bartle said.

Mr Bartle was visiting his Cambodia factory when Meghan made her appearance in his product, causing him to cut his trip short.

He immediately expressed his delight on Instagram.

‘We cannot think of a more suitable woman to carry the Outland Denim brand. A big thank you to the Duchess of Sussex (and bump!) for choosing to wear Outland Denim on this #royaltour!’ the brand said.

‘We’re still singing in the rain over the Duchess in Outland Denim (but can you blame us!?) We cannot thank you enough for all the messages of support you have sent our way in the past 24 hours.’

Famous friends: Just hours later, Serena Williams’ official Instagram account shared side-by-side images of the athlete (right) and her royal best friend (left) wearing the oversized blazer

Social media push: The sporting superstar shared the images with this gushing caption. She also directed fans to the website to shop the checked blazer

Meghan’s choice of outfit also delighted tennis great Serena Williams, whose  eponymous clothing label designed the grey patterned blazer she wore.

The pregnant duchess, who is expecting her first child with husband Prince Harry, teamed the $145 (£110) oversized ‘boss’ blazer with a classic white shirt and the black jeans and black boots for the Dubbo outing.

Just hours later, Serena Williams’ official Instagram account shared side-by-side images of the athlete and the royal in the blazer, while the Serena online store was redesigned to feature a massive photo of Meghan at the top of the site.

The tagline next to the image reads: ‘A trail blazer in the Serena boss blazer’.

The blazer also quickly sold out online.

Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, launched her clothing line in May as she returned to the tennis circuit following the birth of her first child, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, in September 2017.

Cashing in: The Serena website was also redesigned to feature a massive photo of Meghan with the tagline ‘a trail blazer in the Serena Boss Blazer’ within hours of the appearance

Sell-out success: Perhaps unsurprisingly, the blazer has sold out in all sizes online, pictured

Among the Serena designs was a $90 (£70) ‘Royal Duchess hoodie’, which fans believe was inspired by her close friend Meghan.

The pair are believed to have met at the 2010 Super Bowl and Williams was among the star-studded congregation at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding in May.

The designer reportedly sent one of the ‘Royal Duchess’ hoodies to Kensington Palace for the duchess to wear but the outing in Australia on Wednesday was the first time Meghan had worn one of Williams’ designs in public.
