CCTV shows ‘terrifying’ movements of killers who fatally stabbed 20-year-old man

This "terrifying" CCTV footage shows the movements of four killers on the night a 20-year-old man was stabbed to death on a street in Cardiff.

Murderers Daniel Roberts, Christopher Griffiths and Awez Jamshaid, along with accomplice Saif Shahzad, were caught on camera at the scene on Holmesdale Street in Grangetown.

The group were given lengthy jail sentences for their part in the murder of Malaciah Thomas at Cardiff Crown Court.

In her sentencing remarks, Mrs Justice Nerys Jefford said: “[The attack] was caught on CCTV and what we have seen is terrifying.”

During the trial, prosecutor Patrick Harrington QC warned the jury of eight men and four women that some of the footage would be “harrowing”.

The jurors were shown 84 pieces of footage, starting with victim Malaciah Thomas and his “on-off” girlfriend Naomi Davies going into her friend Chloe Xuereb’s flat.

Later clips showed Jamshaid driving drug dealer Roberts, friend Griffiths and drugs runner Shahzad across Cardiff in an Audi A3.

They were caught on camera from around 1.30am on July 23 last year travelling from Priest Road to Newport Road, City Road, The Parade, Central Link and James Street.

The defendants were seen to walk past Mr Thomas, who was sitting in the driver’s seat of his silver Ford Fusion on Holmesdale Street.

What Mr Harrington described as “part one” of the attack – the stabbing in the car – was caught on CCTV.

Roberts can be seen putting on gloves and jumping over a wall before kicking in the driver’s side window and lunging in at Mr Thomas while Griffiths blocks the passenger door.

The jury were shown a “panoramic view”, which allowed them to see that part of the attack from three different angles. This has not been released for publication.

Mr Harrington said there was “very limited” footage of the next part of the attack, which happened on Corporation Road.

Other pieces of footage showed the Audi A3 travelling back across the city following the killing.

Later that day, Roberts and Griffiths were caught on camera getting a coach to London as they fled the scene.

The footage was released by South Wales Police after the men were sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court.

Daniel Roberts, 20, who rained down fatal blows in a rage-filled, calculated assault while Malaciah was trapped in his car, will serve a minimum of 25 years behind bars.

His accomplice Christopher Griffiths, 30, who blocked his friend’s love rival from escaping, will also serve a minimum of 25 years behind bars.

Their driver, Awez Jamshaid, 19, was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 11 years.

Fellow defendant Saif Shahzad was sentenced to seven years and six months in a young offenders institution.
