Home cooks dished out their culinary wisdom in a viral Reddit thread after a user asked: ‘What dish is extremely easy to prepare, but makes you look like an incredible chef?’

Nearly 11,000 people have commented with their suggestions and the thread has been upvoted 43,500 times.

From home-made palmier biscuits to an impressive panna cotta that is surprisingly easy to make, these are the top-rated recipe ideas from home cooks who know how to whip up a feast to wow a crowd with little effort. 

1. PANNA COTTA 

This Reddit user said panna cotta is a surprisingly easy dessert to make at home and shared his simple instructions for whipping it up, warning that you shoud use half cream and half milk, and soak a gelatin leaf in cold water

2. BANANAS FOSTER 

This user says that Bananas Foster looks very impressive but is surprisingly easy to make. All you need to do is melt butter and sugar together, add in banana liqueur, then add sliced bananas, add rum and set alight. He recommends serving on pound or madeira cake or with vanilla ice cream

3. CAPRESE SALAD

A simple salad of tomato slices with mozzerella cheese, olive oil, basil, balsamic vinegar and seasoning looks impressive and tastes just as good, according to this Reddit user

4. PALMIERS

They might look straight out of a French bakery but Palmier biscuits are surprisingly easy to make, according to this home cook, especially if you cheat and buy pre-made puff pastry (even Mary Berry does that). All you need to do is roll out the pastry, coat in sugar and then roll the two sides into the middle so they meet and curl upwards before slicing into pieces
