Denise Richards to critics of her sexy wedding dress: ‘I loved it, that’s all I care about’

These wedding traditions have been around for many years, but in the modern era, they are falling away. Keri Lumm reports.

Denise Richards is still glowing over her romantic Malibu oceanside nuptials to Aaron Phypers on Saturday and the “sexy” lace romper wedding dress she rocked.

As for critics who didn’t approve of the minidress with detachable tulle skirt, Richards suggests they go in a different direction when they get married. She won’t judge.

“It’s a sexy dress and it’s fun,” Richards tells USA TODAY. “It was appropriate because we got married in Malibu overlooking the ocean. I’m a beachy girl. I like that it was short and it wasn’t a gown.”

“To critics of my dress: I loved it, that’s all I care about,” she adds. “At their wedding, they can wear whatever they want.”

Richards, 47, who stars in the horror film “The ToyBox”  (in theaters Friday in Los Angeles, streaming and on Blu-ray Sept. 18), says Phypers asked to marry her last year. But they spontaneously moved the ceremony to Sept. 8, chosen because it was soon and the number eight represents infinity. “We didn’t want to wait, it was like, ‘Let’s just do it,’ ” she says.

24 hours to make a wedding dress? NO PROBLEM!! Congratulations to Denise Richards and Aaron Phypers! Designer Mark Zunino had 24 hours to make the stunning wedding dress.

Richards says the playful design also handled the issue of what to wear for her second wedding. She was married to Charlie Sheen from 2002 until their divorce in 2006, and they have two daughters.

“I didn’t want a big traditional wedding dress. … I did the traditional dress at my first wedding,” says Richard. “If I wore a long traditional gown, critics would say, ‘For her second wedding, why is she wearing white?’ “

Critics on social media focused on the shortness of the design.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had a wedding dress create more split opinions than the dress we just did for Denise Richards,” Zunino wrote in a now-deleted Instagram post, according to CNN. “Here’s our thought: we work for the bride/client. As long as they’re in love with the design, we feel we’ve done our job.”

And Richards did love it.

“There’s always someone who is going to say something really negative,” she says. “I just ignore it. I don’t read that kind of stuff.”

Best part about the dress: It allowed Richards to make a grand exit from the wedding on the back of Phypers’ Indian motorcycle. No limo desired.

“We even had the ‘Just Married’ sign on the bike,” she says. “So I just took the (detachable) skirt off and threw it in his saddlebag on his bike. It was fun.

“The wedding was so much fun. It was small and intimate and very special.”
