Dwayne Johnson Reveals How His Wrestler Grandpa Inspired 'Hobbs & Shaw'

The family grew so large that the Fast and the Furious movies couldn’t contain them all. Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) got their own spinoff this summer in The Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Hobbs and Shaw didn’t like working together, but when it was Hobbs vs. Shaw, the winner was the audience who got to see the fireworks.

Hobbs & Shaw is now available on digital. On Tuesday, November 5, you can get Hobbs & Shaw on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD with additional extra taking you behind the scenes with Johnson, Statham, Idris Elba, Roman Reigns, Vanessa Kirby, director David Leitch and more. Showbiz Cheat Sheet got an early copy of the Blu-ray. Here are some things we learned about Dwayne Johnson and his costars, and you can learn more on Tuesday.

Dwayne Johnson got this move from his grandfather

When Hobbs leads his brothers in a Samoan battle against the villains, Hobbs bites one bad guy’s face. Dwayne Johnson told the story of how his grandfather Peter Maivia bit another wrestler in a legendary story.

“My grandfather was a very popular professional wrestler, widely considered the man who put Samoa on the map. As the story goes, on a wresting tour in Japan my grandfather was having dinner with his wrestler friends after the show. They were drinking. My grandfather and this other wrestler have words and they begin to fight in the restaurant. As they spill out into the street, this wrestler goes to double underarm hook my grandfather. My grandfather does the only thing to do. He bites this guy’s face and he winds up biting his eye out. In Hobbs & Shaw that is an homage to DJ’s grandfather.”

Idris Elba improvised ‘black Superman’

Brixton (Idris Elba) is an indestructible villain thanks to computer enhancements and bulletproof body armor. He calls himself black Superman, a line screenwriter Chris Morgan admits he didn’t write.

“He literally just said it on the set,” Morgan said. “The second we heard, all of us turned to each other and we’re like, ‘Yeah, that’s right. That’s what that is.’ That’s 100% him.”

Roman Reigns will wrestle again

WWE superstar Roman Reigns plays one of Hobbs’ Samoan brothers in the finale. He used the bonus features to announce his plans to return to the ring, and continue pursuing acting in Johnson’s footsteps.

“I want to get back to the ring of course,” Reigns said. “When the time comes it’s going to be a natural transition. This is why I’m so grateful to be in this situation is to prepare myself.”

Dwayne Johnson named his dog Hobbs

Dwayne Johnson named his own dog Hobbs, and Hobbs has a cameo as Hobbs’ dog in the movie.

“Hobbs is about 3 years old,” Johnson said. “You know there’s a lot of love for this guy when I come in on my day off to be the dog wrangler. He was disciplined, unlike his owner. He was professional, unlike his owner and he listened to the director, unlike his owner.”

Dwayne Johnson may have gotten hit in the face

The final battle with Brixton slows things down so we can see Hobbs, Shaw and Hattie (Vanessa Kirby) land punches against him. Brixton gets some good shots in and Leitch isn’t telling which ones are real.

“There’s a combination of practical stunts, willing actors and visual effects that made this all happen,” Leitch said. “I think people are going to go like how’d they do that? Did they really just punch Dwayne in the face? Maybe. You never know.”
