Engaged couple have been together 10 years – but have unusual living arrangement

After a decade together, there's absolutely no doubt that Christian Swann and Maaike Veenkamp are in it for the long haul.

The couple are loved up, they've been engaged for two years and they've recently come back from an idyllic holiday in Bali.

But upon their return from holiday, they did something that most couples in their position wouldn't do – they said goodbye and returned to their separate houses.

Maaike admits that people are stunned when they find out the happy couple have decided to live apart.

And not only that, they don't even have plans to move in together once they tie the knot.

Maaike, 30, told news.com.au : “You can literally see the shock on people’s faces when I tell them we’ve been together a decade and engaged for two years — but we don’t live together.

“I foresee us getting married in the next couple of years but not living together for at least another five years because of our career choices."

The couple left the UK four years ago and moved to Australia, where they initially lived together for six months.

But work commitments changed their plans, with Maaike remaining in Sydney while Christian, 31, has moved cities due to his job as a university lecturer.

The distance between them makes the time they spent together even more special – and Friday nights, when Christian flies back to Sydney at the end of the work week, are a big deal for them.

Once Maaike finishes work, she says she "literally runs to the pub", where she meets Christian once his flight lands.
