STOP DECANTING YOUR SPICES

Many people like to find decorative containers to store their spices, but experts from Apartment Therapy have deemed it completely unnecessary.

Not only with it take people a long time to do, there is no proof that it will make them last longer.

Doing this can also make your spices take up a lot more space than necessary.

NEVER KEEP MILK IN THE FRIDGE DOOR

While 99 per cent of us might keep our milk in the door of the fridge for ease of use and simplicity’s sake, according to Choice dairy is far better off on the bottom shelf.

‘Everyone keeps milk in the door, but this is actually the warmest part of the fridge,’ they revealed in a video on the subject.

Instead, milk will last far longer if you keep it on the bottom shelf, where it’s cooler. Milk is best stored at or below four degrees Celsius.

STOP PUTTING TOMATO SAUCE IN THE CUPBOARD 

Dipping chips in cold ketchup may not be to your taste, but scientists say keeping it in the cupboard has health risks.

‘No one kept tomato ketchup in the fridge a decade ago, but then it contained more salt,’ Dr Peter Barratt of Initial Hygiene previously told Femail.

‘In recent years, food manufacturers have cut the amount of salt, a natural preservative, because of its links to high blood pressure.’

But a lack of salt means ketchup is prone to decay, a process accelerated when high temperatures help food poisoning bacteria to thrive. Storing it in the fridge slows this down and makes the sauce last longer

DON’T PUT TOMATOES IN THE CRISPER

According to Choice, the crisper – an enclosed drawer at the bottom of fridges – shouldn’t store tomatoes.

Although it has specifically been designed to keep fruit and vegetables fresh and ready to eat for several days, tomatoes shouldn’t be included. 

‘Your tomatoes don’t belong in your fridge – keeping them in a fruit bowl on the counter keeps them bursting with flavour,’ Choice revealed.

DON’T THROW YOUR KNIVES INTO A DRAWER

According to Nine Honey people need to stop throwing their knives into their kitchen drawers.

This is because doing so could dull the knife blades, as well as create a safety issue that could see eager hands cutting themselves as they reach inside.

It is better to put them on a magnetic strip or buy a knife block to put them in. 

REMOVE CANNED GOODS FROM THE PANTRY

Although there is nothing unsafe with storing canned food in the pantry, it often means that people forget what they have.

This means when shopping people tend to buy certain cans a second time or miss their use by date.

Nine Honey recommend using a magazine storage rack and place the oldest cans towards the front and the newer cans towards the back.

This means home cooks will constantly be using the ones that are closest to their use by date.

DON’T STACK CAST IRON PANS

Nine Honey also explained that people should avoid stacking pans on top of each other when storing them in the cupboard.

This is due to the fact that when you place metal on top of metal it scratches it, causing irreparable damage.

They suggested putting a sheet of paper towel between each pan to prevent friction.   

KEEP BULBS OUT OF SUNLIGHT

If you’ve been leaving garlic bulbs out on the worktops, they’ll be going off much quicker.

You should store garlic and onions in a bamboo steamer, giving them a cool, well ventilated home that protects them from the light.

This will prevent sprouting, which means they’ll be edible for much longer.
