Grandad slams Asda for charging almost £1 less for plastic-wrapped tins of beans

A baked beans fan has slammed Asda for charging 96p less for plastic-wrapped tins of baked beans.

John Brassington, 71 and from Stafford, had a heart attack in 2011 and was forced to take up a healthier diet.

The eco-conscious grandfather's go-to breakfast option is now baked beans, of which he usually buys 24 individual cans.

But after going to Asda, he was shocked to discover if he bought the beans in plastic wrapped multi-packs of four he could save 96p.

Speaking to Stoke on Trent Live , the he said, said: "I had a heart attack about nine years ago and I've lost almost 11 stone with a new healthier diet.

"I usually have baked beans on toast a lot for breakfast as part of my diet. So, every six weeks I buy 24 cans of baked beans on cardboard trays.

"But when I went this time I noticed if I bought the plastic-wrapped multi-packs of four cans they came to £6 but if I bought 24 individual cans it came to £6.96 – that's almost a pound more. Before I assumed they were both the same price.

"I try to live very frugally being retired but I'm also eco-conscious. We grow our own fruit and veg to cut down on our plastic use and I try to avoid buying things with single use plastic.

"Asda charges less for the plastic-wrapped beans and it encourages shoppers to get the cheaper multi-pack beans wrapped in plastic.

"The pointless plastic should be stopped, they need to stop plastic wrapping and I'm amazed they can charge more for the plastic free cans.
