Kate Wright is now Kate Ferdinand as she takes on husband Rio’s name following lavish Turkey wedding
Former TOWIE star Kate Wright has just married football legend Rio Ferdinand in a stunning ceremony in Turkey after three years of dating. But when Kate fell for Rio she did not just gain a partner, she also gained a whole new family.
In 2015, two years before the couple met, Rio’s beloved wife Rebecca tragically passed away from breast cancer leaving behind her three children Lorenz, 13, Tate, 11 and Tia, eight.
However, according to The Sun, before she died she gave Rio her blessing to move on. Speaking of her newfound family, Kate, 28, said: "Rio and I just clicked. I knew about the children and what had happened but at first I didn't give it much thought.
"When you meet someone you're just enjoying the moment, not thinking about how serious things might become. I fell in love with Rio, then I met the kids and fell in love with them."
At the wedding the children played a special part too. Rio’s sons Lorenz and Tate walked her half way down the aisle and Tia acted as Maid of Honour. The groom, who met his bride under a stunning floral arch, said: “Seeing Tia walk up the aisle before Kate set me off. It was just so emotional. There was just no going back on the emotion, that’s why I had to keep my shades on!
“Seeing Tate and Lorenz walk Kate down the aisle was particularly poignant and we wouldn’t have wanted to do it any other way. They were so proud and they couldn’t wait to do that, they felt important.”
Rio’s children also gave a touching speech which he described as an “emotional rollercoaster”. Speaking of his children’s struggle after losing their mother, he continued: “After the pain the kids have been through, to see them so happy and speak so confidently and openly about their feelings towards Kate, in front of our friends and family, capped it all off.”
Kate told us: “The kids’ speeches were really emotional. Obviously I know that they love me, and I love them madly. But just them telling me that in front of everyone was just the most special thing, I can’t explain how that felt.”

Because of this bond Kate has changed her surname to Ferdinand, so that it can be the same as her stepchildren’s. She said: “I always felt part of the family. It’s changed nothing, it’s just nice to have the same name as the children now. Everyone else sees it differently and now we’re married they see it as official, but honestly it’s always been that way, we are a family regardless.”
The star added: "It’s lovely being Mrs Ferdinand though. He’s my soulmate. It’s been an emotional journey for sure, but it’s all worth it."
The footballer was thrilled too, saying: “We’ve become a proper family unit now. I’m just so happy we’re all as one.”
