Since she stepped into the spotlight as Prince Harry’s glamorous new fiancée, countless brands have profited from Meghan Markle’s sartorial endorsements.

And now it seems labels could be actively cashing in on the so-called ‘Meghan effect’ after a coat she wore in Belfast was hiked up in price.

Shortly before her wedding to Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex visited Belfast wearing a $750 CAD (£427) wool coat from Canadian brand Mackage, which sold out almost immediately.

It appears the label has cashed in on its popularity by ramping up the price of the belted number by $40 CAD (£23), up to $790 CAD (£450).

MailOnline has contacted Mackage for comment.

It comes just weeks after MailOnline revealed how the Duchess’s close friend Misha Nonoo’s fashion label advertised her ‘Husband’ shirt – once worn by Meghan – as ‘the shirt that sealed the deal’.

Meghan first wore the Mackage coat when she visited Northern Ireland with Harry in March – and within an hour it was already out of stock.

The ‘Mai’ coat boasts a stylish waterfall collar and comes in four colours – meaning Meghan style devotees can also snap it up in black, gold and light grey if they’re willing to shell out the extra cash.

Meghan teamed it with a bottle green dress by Greta Constantine, a cream top by Victoria Beckham, and towering suede heels by Jimmy Choo.

Mackage is shaping up to be one of Ms. Markle’s favourite labels; she opted for a white wrap coat for a photo call after Kensington Palace announced the couple’s engagement in November, and once again for their first joint outing in Nottingham the following month.

It’s not the first time the so-called ‘Meghan effect’ has sent sales soaring; the princess-in-waiting has boosted sales of shoes, handbags and dresses since her betrothal to Harry was first announced.

And proving that she is well on her way to becoming the nation’s new style queen, a £425 crossbody bag she wore in Edinburgh earlier this year also sold out in record time.

Meghan opted for a bottle green Strathberry East/ West mini for her first official visit to Scotland in February – and within minutes it was listed as out of stock on the retailer’s website. 

Ms. Markle had barely stepped out with her fiancé in Edinburgh before royal-watchers began snapping up her bag online.

The Spanish-made East/ West Mini, which comes in 12 different colourways, features the label’s distinctive gold bar closure and is described as ‘elegant and timeless’. 

Her Edinburgh appearance was far from the first example of the so-called ‘Meghan effect’; the former Suits actress caused another Strathberry bag to fly off shelves last year.

She was spotted carrying the label’s £495 midi-tote in burgundy, navy and vanilla for her first official engagement as Harry’s bride-to-be back in December.

And the stylish bag was later revealed to have sold out in just 11 minutes according to the label, launched in 2013. 

A spokesperson for Strathberry told MailOnline FEMAIL at the time: ‘It is such an honour to see Meghan carrying a Strathberry bag again; this time an East / West Mini in Bottle Green. 

‘We are especially thrilled that Meghan is carrying Strathberry in our home city and also after she chose to carry her Strathberry Midi Tote for her first royal engagement back in December.’
