DEAR DEIDRE: MY new boyfriend is lovely to me but was violent towards his ex.
Am I safe to stay with him or should I quit while I am ahead?
I am 26, he is 32 and we met a month ago. He seems lovely and is genuinely sorry for what he did to his ex. He hit her with a saucepan and the police got involved.
He says she wound him up all the time accusing him of things he had not done. I don’t want to break up with him but is it a good idea to give him a chance to prove himself?

DEIDRE SAYS: No matter how irritating his ex was, that was no justification for his violence. He may seem charming now but how can you be certain he won’t react in the same way if you cross him some time in the future?
Ask him to attend a Respect DV perpetrator programme to help him change his behaviour (respectphoneline.org.uk, 0808 802 4040). If he refuses, best walk away.
